Introduction

The Butler baseball roster is packed with talented players from all over the country. Here’s a quick introduction to some of the key members of the team.

Butler’s pitching staff is led by senior ace Nick Deeder. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Deeder has been one of the Bulldogs’ most reliable starters for the past three years. He’s coming off a strong junior campaign in which he posted a 3.38 ERA and struck out nearly a batter per inning.

Junior right-hander Kyle Wilson is another key member of Butler’s pitching staff. A native of Scottsdale, Arizona, Wilson has been one of the team’s most consistent Relief pitchers over the past two seasons. He’ll likely see increased roles in 2019 as he looks to build on his strong body of work.

On the offensive side, Butler will be led by senior first baseman/outfielder Nate Woeste. A four-year starter, Woeste is one of the most experienced members of the team. He’s coming off a strong junior season in which he hit .296 with 12 home runs and 37 RBIs. Woeste will be counted on to provide leadership and production in the middle of Butler’s lineup this season.

The Bulldogs will also look to junior outfielder Justin Conklin for production at the top of the lineup. A native of Carmel, Indiana, Conklin is a gifted athlete who can impact the game in a variety of ways. He finished last season with a .270 batting average 16 stolen bases and 31 runs scored Conklin will once again be counted on to set the table for Butler’s offense in 2019.

Schedule

The Butler Baseball Team is set to begin their season on February 14th with a Home game against Ball State They will then embark on a six-game road trip playing three games each against Notre Dame and Purdue. Their first home game of the season will be on March 3rd against Xavier. The Conference Schedule will begin on March 24th when they host Seton Hall

Results

The Butler baseball team made it to the semi-finals of the NCAA tournament this year, losing to Florida State Here is a look at the team’s results this season.

The team finished the regular season with a record of 38-20, which was good for second place in the Big East Conference They then went on to win the conference tournament earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament

In the NCAA tournament they won their first game against Maryland, but then lost to Florida State in the semi-finals.

Pitchers

Drew Rasmussen – A senior from Omaha, Nebraska, Rasmussen is a right-handed pitcher who was named a preseason All-American by perfect game He is a three-time All-Big East selection and was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Year in 2019.

Cooper Bradshaw – A junior from Greenwood, Indiana, Bradshaw is a left-handed pitcher who was also named a preseason All-American by perfect game He was named First Team All-Big East in 2019 after posting a 5-1 record with a 2.48 ERA.

Outfielders

Kyle Richardson – A senior from Carmel, Indiana, Richardson is a center fielder who was named Second Team All-Big East in 2019. He hit .293 with nine home runs and 39 RBI last season.

Max Murphy – A junior from Avon, Indiana, Murphy is a right fielder who hit .333 with 11 home runs and 41 RBI last season. He was named First Team All-Big East in 2019 and is considered one of the best power hitters in the conference.

Designated hitter/utility player

Cam McDonald – A senior from Noblesville, Indiana, McDonald is a designated hitter/utility player who hit .325 with 10 Home Runs and 40 RBI last season. He was named First Team All-Big East in 2019 and will be one of the team’s leaders this season.

About

The Butler Baseball Team is set to begin their 2019 season in just a few weeks. head coach Dave Schrage and his staff have been busy preparing the team for their upcoming campaign. The Bulldogs will have a total of 34 games this season, including 28 in the Horizon League They are set to open their conference schedule on March 9th against Northern Kentucky.

This year’s squad is made up of 27 student-athletes, 14 of which are pitchers. The team will rely heavily on their pitching staff as they look to make a run at the Horizon League title. The Bulldogs return two of their top three pitchers from last season in senior Ryan Obtenwinkle and junior Griffin Moore. Obtenwinkle was named to the All-League Second Team last year after posting a 3-2 record with a 3.38 ERA in 16 appearances, while Moore was named Honorable Mention All-League after going 4-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 15 appearances.

Infielders Dylan Barker and Michael Riddle will be looked upon to lead the way offensively for Butler. Barker, a senior, is the team’s returning leader in batting average (.305), hits (53), and stolen bases (12) from last season. Riddle, a junior, is the team’s returning leader in home runs (5) and RBIs (30).

The Bulldogs will have their work cut out for them if they want to make it back to the NCAA tournament this year, but with a strong pitching staff and some experienced hitters, they definitely have a shot at making some noise in the Horizon League
