Nicholls Baseball: Key Players for Spring 2020
As the college baseball season rapidly approaches, fans of the Nicholls Colonels are looking forward to see how their team will fare. After a disappointing 2019 campaign in which the team only managed 10 wins, there is hope that 2020 will be a rebound year. The team will certainly have their work cut out for them, as they will be playing in one of the most competitive conference in Division I Baseball the Southland Conference But with a solid core of returning players, as well as some talented newcomers, the Colonels have a chance to surprise some people this spring. Here are some key players to keep an eye on:
Sophomore pitcher Brigham Hill was one of the bright spots on the team last year, pitching to a 3.86 ERA in 16 starts. He will look to build on that success this season and anchor the starting rotation.
Junior infielder Jake Romano was another key contributor last season, hitting .280 with 4 home runs and 26 RBIs. He will be counted on to provide some much-needed pop in the middle of the lineup this year.
Freshman outfielder Josh Robinson is one of the newcomers to Watch This Season He was a highly touted recruit coming out of High School and has already impressed coaches with his bat speed and power potential.
Keep an eye on these Colonels this spring as they look to make some noise in the Southland Conference!
Nicholls Baseball: Spring 2020 Position Battles
As Nicholls State University’s Baseball team prepares for the 2020 season, there are a few position battles still to be decided.
The Colonels will have to replace a few Key Players from last year’s team, including All-American catcher Kodie Tidwell, who was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the fifth round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft.
The Colonels also lost two of their top starting pitchers from last season in Diehl Mangus and Troy Sieber, who both graduated.
There are a few different options for who will fill those voids this season.
At catcher, redshirt junior Jaylon Keys appears to be the leading candidate to take over behind the plate. Keys has appeared in 11 games in his career at Nicholls, but he has yet to record an at-bat.
In terms of pitching, senior right-hander Chase Burchett is one of the leading candidates to replace Sieber in the starting rotation. Burchett made seven starts last season and posted a 4-2 record with a 4.15 ERA.
Another candidate for a starting spot is junior right-hander Peyton Kurker, who appeared in 15 games out of the bullpen last season. Kurker went 2-1 with two saves and a 3.86 ERA in 2019.
The Colonels will also look to several newcomers to step into key roles this season. Freshman infielder/outfielder Nate Blanchard is one player who could make an immediate impact for Nicholls this season. Blanchard was rated as the No. 2 overall prospect in Louisiana by perfect game USA coming out of high school
Nicholls Baseball: Spring 2020 Burning Questions
As we inch closer to the start of Nicholls baseball’s 2020 season, there are a few burning questions on everyone’s mind. Who will step up and be the team’s leader? How will the pitching staff fare after losing some key members to graduation? And, most importantly, can the Colonels make it back to the Southland Conference tournament?
We won’t have all the answers until the season gets underway, but we can take a look at what we do know and try to make some predictions. Here’s a breakdown of Nicholls’ 2020 schedule and what to watch for this spring.
Nicholls will open its season on Feb. 14 with a three-game series at home against Louisiana-Lafayette. The Ragin’ Cajuns are always a tough opponent, but Nicholls has had success against them in recent years In 2019, the Colonels took two out of three from ULL en route to a berth in the conference tournament
The Colonels will then hit the road for a four-game swing through Texas, taking on Sam Houston State (Feb. 21-23) and Incarnate Word (Feb. 28-March 1). Nicholls fared well against both teams last year, going 3-1 against SHSU and 2-2 against UIW. These will be critical games as Nicholls looks to stamp its ticket back to Sulphur for the conference tournament
After returning home for a brief two-game stint against Southeastern Louisiana (March 3-4), Nicholls will embark on its longest road trip of the season, an eight-game swing through Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The Colonels will take on Alabama A&M (March 6-8), Jackson State (March 13-15) and Grambling State (March 20-22) before wrapping up the trip with a four-game series at McNeese (March 27-29).
This stretch of games could make or break Nicholls’ season as they face some tough foes in Jackson State and Grambling State The Colonels will need to be at their best if they want to come out of this road trip with a winning record.
The final month of the regular season should be another tough test for Nicholls as they take on conference foes Northwestern State (April 3-5), Central Arkansas (April 10-12) and Southeastern Louisiana (April 17-19) before finishing up at home against Lamar (April 24-26).
With so many crucial games on the schedule, it’s hard to predict how things will shake out for Nicholls this spring. But one thing is certain — it should be an exciting season of Colonels baseball!
