The Early Years

They have won a total of eight conference championships, four regional championships, and two National Championships The team has also produced many Major League Baseball players, including Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner

The College’s First Team

Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colorado, has a long and successful tradition in baseball. The college’s first baseball team was organized in 1896, and the team has been in continuous operation since then. In the early years, the team played mostly local teams from small towns in Colorado and Kansas. In the early 1900s, the team began playing larger schools such as the University of Denver and the University of Colorado By the mid-1900s, Otero Junior College was one of the top junior college baseball programs in the country. The team has won eight National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championships, more than any other Junior College in the country.

The College’s First Season

Otero Junior College’s baseball program began in 1952, the school’s second year of operation. The Rattlers won their first game against Western State College of Colorado, 5-3. The team lost their next game adams state College, but went on to win fourteen consecutive games, finishing the season with a record of 15-1.

The following year, the Rattlers again won fifteen games and lost only one, this time to New Mexico Highlands University. The 1954 team included future Major League baseball player Tommy Harper. The team finished the season with a record of 15-1 and was ranked No. 1 in the nation among junior colleges by the National Association of Baseball Coaches

In 1955, Otero Junior College joined the newly-formedColorado Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Menand began competing against four-year colleges and universities as well as other junior colleges. The Rattlers had another successful season finishing with a record of 18-4.

Otero Junior College’s Baseball Program has enjoyed success throughout its history. The team has won seventeen conference championships and made fifteen appearances in the NJCAA Division I World Series most recently in 2016.

The College’s First Game

The very first Otero junior college baseball game was played on April 10, 1937 against Canine College. Otero won 22-21 in an extra inning thriller. This game set the tone for the program for years to come. Under the leadership of Head Coach John Tincher, the Rattlers captured 3 NJCAA World Series titles in 1937, 1939, and 1941. The team also produced 29 MLB Draft picks during this time, including Future Hall of famer Sandy Koufax

The College’s First Win

Otero Junior College’s first victory in baseball came on March 12, 1925, when the team defeated Southern Colorado Teacher’s College 9-1. The game was played in La Junta, Colorado.

JerryUMPwinkle was the college’s first All-American in baseball. He went on to have a great career in the Major Leagues playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers
