NMMI Basketball is one of the most successful programs in the state of New Mexico. The team has won 11 conference championships and 7 state championships since its inception in 1923. NMMI has also produced 31 All-Americans, including 2 NBA players

The NMMI Basketball Program is renowned for its commitment to academic excellence. 100% of NMMI basketball players have graduated from High School and 90% of those have gone on to earn a college degree The program also teaches life skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and discipline.

The History of New Mexico Military Institute Basketball

New Mexico Military Institute Basketball is a tradition of excellence. The program has won 12 conference championships and four State Championships and has produced numerous Division I and professional players. NMMI has a rich history of success on the court, dating back to its founding in 1891.

The early years of NMMI Basketball were dominated by teams from the East Coast The first intercollegiate game in NMMI history was played against the University of Chicago in 1896, and the Institute did not record its first win until 1903, when it defeated Stevens Institute of Technology The early years were marked by sporadic success, with NMMI winning just six games over a four-year period from 1896-1900.

However, things began to turn around in 1901 under Head Coach Frank Haskins. Haskins led NMMI to a 9-5 record, the school’s best mark to that point. He would go on to coach at NMMI for 19 seasons, compiling a 193-104 record and leading the team to two conference championships. Haskins remains the winningest coach in school history.

NMMI’s greatest period of success came under head coach Neil McCarthy in the 1960s and 1970s. McCarthy coached at NMMI for 14 seasons, winning two conference championships and four State Championships He also led the team to its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 1968. McCarthy is also the only NMMI coach to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame he was inducted in 1992 for his coaching career at Vanderbilt University

Today, NMMI Basketball remains one of the top programs in New Mexico high school basketball. The team plays its home games at “The Dog House,” named after legendary Head Coach Neil McCarthy. The Dog House is one of the most historic basketball venues in New Mexico, and has been home to some of the state’s best players over the years.

The NMMI Broncos have a long tradition of success on the court, dating back to their first season in 1909. In fact, they are one of only six programs to have won at least 20 conference championships. They have also made 14 NCAA tournament appearances, including a run to the Elite Eight in 2000.

This year’s team is looking to build on that success and add another chapter to the storied history of NMMI Basketball. Led by Head coach Paul Weir, the Broncos are off to a great start with a perfect 7-0 record in conference play
