The early years of the program were marked by modest success, with the team winning just one state title in its first 16 years of existence. But things began to change in 1978, when Belisle took over as Head Coach Under his leadership, Mount St. Charles quickly became a powerhouse, winning an incredible 34 straight State Championships from 1978 to 2012.

During that 34-year stretch, the team racked up an astounding 1,473 wins against just 153 losses, and produced a long list of NHL stars, including Hall of Famers Chris Chelios and Brian Leetch. In 2017, the team was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame

In the 1980s, the Mount St. Helens Hockey Team was one of the most dominant teams in all of college hockey They won the NCAA Division I National Championship in both 1982 and 1983, and were runners-up in 1981 and 1984. They also won 7 conference championships during that decade. The team was coached by Bill Belisle and featured several future NHL Players including Raymond Bourque, Chris Thorburn, and Craig Janney.

With 11 State Championships 26 New England Championships, and 3 National Championships the tradition of excellence is alive and well in Woonsocket, Rhode Island After a few down years, the program is back on top and looking to add to its already storied history.

Under the guidance of new head coach Nate Leaman, the Mount has returned to prominence. In just his second season at the helm, Leaman led the team to its first state championship in over a decade. The team followed that up with an appearance in the New England Championship game ultimately falling just short of capturing another title.

With a core group of experienced players returning for the 2019-2020 Season Mount St. Charles is primed for another run at championships. Led by captains Andrew Pezza and Kyle Marcotte, the team will look to take that next step and bring more hardware back to Woonsocket.

The New Millennium

As the new millennium dawned, the team’s on-ice success continued. In 2000-2001, the team went undefeated in regular season play with a record of 29-0-1. They followed that up with another Championship season, this time going 28-1-1. The team’s two losses that year came at the hands of eventual National Champion Avon Old Farms In 2001-2002, the team won yet another Championship with a record of 26-3-0. That year, they also became only the second team in Rhode Island history to win 500 games when they defeated Xavier of Connecticut 5-2.

The 2010s

The 2010s have been a decade of excellence for Mount St. Charles hockey. The team has won four state championships and six conference championships. They have also been ranked #1 in the nation three times. In addition to their on-ice success, the team has also been recognized for their sportsmanship and community service.
