Forwards

Bobby Ryan – The 31-year-old winger is coming off a down year in Ottawa, but he’s a four-time 30-goal scorer and should still have plenty of good hockey left in him. He’s reportedly looking for a short-term deal in the $6 million range. Possible landing spots: Boston, Nashville, Winnipeg

Matt Duchene – One of the most sought-after forwards on the market, Duchene is coming off a career year in which he posted 70 points for the Senators. He’s just 27 years old and should be in line for a hefty raise on his $6 million salary from last season. Possible landing spots: Columbus, Nashville, Tampa Bay

Artemi Panarin – The 27-year-old Russian winger is one of the NHL’s most dynamic offensive players posting point totals of 74, 80 and 87 over the last three seasons. He’s reportedly looking for a deal in the $11 million range. Possible landing spots: Florida, Montreal, NY Rangers

Defensemen

Tyler Myers – The towering 6’8″ defenseman had a quietly effective season for Winnipeg, posting seven goals and 21 points while averaging over 22 minutes of ice time per game. He’s just 28 years old and should be in line for a nice raise on his $5.5 million salary from last season. Possible landing spots: Carolina, Edmonton, Pittsburgh

Jake Gardiner – The 28-year-old blueliner is coming off a down year in Toronto, but he’s still an excellent skater with good offensive instincts. He’s reportedly looking for a deal in the $6 million range. Possible landing spots: Detroit, New Jersey, NY Islanders

As the NHL’s free-agency period begins today, here’s a tracker of all the latest signings, with analysis of each move.

The most prominent names on the market are Pittsburgh Penguins center Jordan Staal, New Jersey Devils winger Zach Parise and Nashville Predators defenseman Ryan Suter.

In addition to those marquee names, there are several other notable players available, including forwards Dustin Penner, Ray Whitney and Jaromir Jagr; and defensemen Matt Carle, Pavel Kubina and Jason Garrison.

Here’s a look at all the latest signings:

Penner signs four-year deal with Oilers: The Oilers have signed forward Dustin Penner to a four-year contract worth $21 million. Penner was one of the most sought-after forwards on the market and his signing is a major coup for the Oilers. He gives them much-needed size and scoring punch up front and should be a nice complement to young forwards Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Whitney signs two-year deal with Stars: The Stars have signed veteran forward Ray Whitney to a two-year contract worth $9 million. Whitney is coming off a very productive season with the Phoenix Coyotes, posting 77 points in 80 games. At 42 years old, he’s not quite the player he once was, but he can still put up points and will be a nice addition to the Stars’ offense.

Jagr signs one-year deal with Devils: The Devils have signed Future Hall of Famer Jaromir Jagr to a one-year contract worth $4 million. Jagr had an excellent season with the Dallas Stars last year, tallying 59 points in 73 games. He’s still an elite offensive player at age 41 and should provide a nice boost to the Devils’ attack.

NHL Free Agency is underway and there have been a flurry of signings and rumors in the first few days. Some of the biggest names on the market have already found new homes, while others are still waiting to see where they will end up.

Here is a running list of all the latest signings and rumors, so you can keep track of where your favorite team is at in the free agency process.

-The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed forward Ryan Callahan to a seven-year extension.
-The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to terms with goalie Scott Darling on a one-year contract.
-The St. Louis Blues have signed forward Jaden Schwartz to a four-year extension.
-The Pittsburgh Penguins are close to signing forward Patric Hornqvist to a five-year extension, according to reports.
-The Los Angeles Kings are close to signing forward Marian Gaborik to a seven-year extension, according to reports.
-Forward Matt Moulson is close to signing with the Minnesota Wild according to reports.

The most notable names on the list are Nashville Predators defenseman PK Subban and New York Islanders captain Anders Lee. Both players are set to become Restricted Free Agents and will be looking for new contracts.

Other notable unrestricted free agents include Dallas Stars goaltender Ben Bishop, St. Louis Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko, and Winnipeg Jets forward Blake Wheeler.

There are also a number of restricted free agents that could be on the move. The most notable names on that list are Colorado Avalanche defenseman Mikko Rantanen, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner, and Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk.

The National Hockey League’s (NHL) signing deadline is approaching and there have been a flurry of activity as teams jockey for position. As of July 5th, here are the latest signings and rumors:

The biggest story of the week was the Chicago Blackhawks signing forward Patrick Kane to a eight-year, $84 million extension. Kane is one of the best players in the league and his extension cements him as a cornerstone piece of the Blackhawks’ core for years to come.

The Pittsburgh Penguins made a big splash by signing forward Jeff Carter to a five-year, $27 million deal Carter provides much-needed scoring depth for the Penguins and should help them contend for a Stanley Cup next season.

Forward Tyler Toffoli signed a three-year, $13.8 million extension with the Los Angeles Kings. Toffoli is coming off consecutive seasons with more than 24 goals and 50 points and will be a key part of the Kings’ offense for years to come.
