The Urban Knights have appeared in two NCAA Division II tournaments. Their first appearance came in 2010 after winning the Pacific West conference tournament They received an automatic bid to the tournament as the conference’s tournament champion. In 2012, they qualified for the tournament by winning both the regular season and conference tournament championships. They became just the second team in PacWest history to achieve this feat.

The Academy of Art University men’s Basketball team has been on a roll lately, with big wins against some tough competition. The team is made up of students from the university’s School of Art and Design, and they’re proving that they’re a force to be reckoned with on the court.
The team’s success is especially impressive considering the challenges they face as an urban, menu-based university. But with hard work and dedication, they’re proving that they can compete with anyone.
We sat down with the team’s coach, Jerrod Mustafa, to talk about their recent success and what it means for the future of the program.
Coach Mustafa: “It’s been an incredible run for our guys so far. We’ve faced some really tough teams and come out on top. I’m just so proud of how hard they’ve worked and how they’ve represented our school.”
“It’s been a lot of fun to watch them grow as a team, and I think we’re just scratching the surface of what this group is capable of doing. We’re excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us.”

The school announced in July 2019 that it would leave Division II and return to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), where it had last competed in the early 1990s. The decision was made after a review of the university’s urban menu of athletics offerings.
