Interleague Standings
In baseball, there are two leagues, the American League (AL) and National League (NL). Each league is made up of three divisions, and each division has five teams. The teams that finish in first place in their respective divisional standings are known as division champions. The team that finishes with the best record in all of baseball is the World Series champion.
Interleague play is when teams from the AL play teams from the NL. The schedule is set up so that each team plays all the other teams in its own league the same number of times. They also play a similar number of games against teams in the other league. For example, if a team plays 162 games in a season, it might play 81 games against AL opponents and 81 against NL opponents.
The League Standings are important because they help to determine which team will have home-field advantage in the World Series Home-field advantage means that a team gets to play more of its games at its home stadium, where it is more familiar with the playing surface and where its fans can cheer it on.
The team with the best record in all of baseball is guaranteed home-field advantage in the World Series regardless of whether it plays in the AL or NL. If two teams from different leagues have identical records, then the team with the better interleague record gets home-field advantage.
