Introduction
Tony Madlock is in his fourth season as the head men’s basketball coach at Alabama State University He has led the Hornets to two straight winning seasons, including a 16-15 mark in 2017-18.
Madlock came to Alabama State after serving as an Assistant Coach at the University of South Alabama for three seasons. He helped the Jaguars to a pair of 20-win seasons and a berth in the 2015 college basketball Invitational.
Prior to his time at South Alabama Madlock was an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, for one season. He helped the Trojans to a 21-13 record and a berth in the 2014 college basketball Invitational.
The Early Years
Tony Barbee was hired as the Head Men’s basketball coach for the University of Alabama in March of 2008. Barbee had just come off four successful seasons as the Head Coach at UTEP, where he compiled a record of 84-52. In his first season at Alabama, Barbee led the team to a 16-15 record, including a 9-7 mark in SEC play. The following year, the Crimson Tide finished with a 21-12 record and made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 2006.
In 2010-11, Alabama finished with a 19-13 record and missed out on the NCAA Tournament The following year, however, Barbee led the team to a 21-12 record and an appearance in the NIT. The 2012-13 season was by far Barbee’s best at Alabama, as he led the team to a 24-12 overall record and an appearance in the NCAA tournament The team also won its first ever SEC tournament game under Barbee before losing to eventual champion Ole Miss in the second round.
Unfortunately, things went downhill from there for Tony Barbee. The 2013-14 season was a disaster, as Alabama finished with a 13-19 overall record and went just 6-12 in SEC play. After starting off 14-8 in 2014-15, Alabama lost its last 12 games of the season and finished with another 14 losses. Things got even worse in 2015-16 when Alabama went just 11-19 overall and 2-16 in SEC play. As a result of these poor showings, Tony Barbee was fired after six seasons at Alabama.
The First Season
In his first season as head coach of the Alabama Mens basketball team Tony Madlock led the Crimson Tide to a 20-12 record and a berth in the National Invitation Tournament It was a marked improvement from the previous season, when Alabama went 9-22, and it was good enough to earn Madlock some recognition as one of the top rookie coaches in the country.
The Second Season
Tony Madlock was named head mens basketball coach at Alabama State University on June 1st, 2016. Prior to his arrival in Montgomery, Coach Madlock spent two seasons as the head mens basketball coach at Chicago State University In his first season at Alabama State the Hornets finished with a 12-17 overall record and a 9-9 mark in Southwestern Athletic conference play The Hornets improved to 16-16 overall and 11-7 in the SWAC during the 2017-18 Season Madlocks second at the helm of the program.
The Third Season
In his third season as the head mens basketball coach at Alabama, Tony Madlock has led the Crimson Tide to a 19-12 record and a berth in the National Invitation Tournament Alabama is one of four SEC teams in the 32-team Nit Field joining Auburn, Mississippi State and Tennessee.
Madlock, who has a career coaching record of 78-62, has guided Alabama to postseason appearances in two of his three seasons at the helm of the Crimson Tide program. In 2016-17, his second year at Alabama, Madlock led Alabama to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2012. The Tide went on to win a first-round game over Virginia Tech before falling to eventual National Champion Villanova in the second round.
The Fourth Season
In his fourth season as Head Coach of the University of Alabama mens Basketball team Tony Madlock has a lot to be proud of. His team has a 20-10 record overall and a 13-5 record in the SEC. They have been ranked as high as #19 in the nation and are currently projected to make the NCAA tournament
The Fifth Season
Tony Barbee enters his fifth season as the Head coach of the mens basketball team at the University of Alabama. The Crimson Tide is coming off a 16-15 (6-10 SEC) campaign in 2014-15 and will look to improve upon that mark in 2015-16.
Coach Barbee has led the Tide to a pair of postseason appearances during his tenure in Tuscaloosa, including a trip to the 2013 NIT Final Four. His teams have also shown marked improvement on the defensive end of the floor, ranking among the nations best in field goal percentage defense over the last three seasons.
The Sixth Season
Tony Madlock is in his sixth season as the head men’s Basketball Coach at the University of Alabama. He has led the Crimson Tide to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet Sixteen in 2004. Madlock has also coached Alabama to two Eastern Conference regular season titles and one SEC Tournament championship.
The Seventh Season
In his seventh season as the head mens basketball coach at Alabama, Tony Madlock has compiled a 175-139 (.557) record. He is the winningest coach in Crimson Tide history. Under his watch, the Tide has produced 12 winning seasons, two SEC Tournament appearances and one NCAA Tournament berth.
The Final Season
Its been quite a ride for Tony Madlock. In his four years as head coach of the mens Basketball team at the University of Alabama, hes won two SEC championships and made it to the NCAA Final Four.
Now, in his final season at the helm of the Crimson Tide Madlock is hoping to go out with a bang.
We want to win a National Championship he said. Thats our goal. Weve got the talent to do it. We just have to go out and perform.
The Alabama State basketball coach has been a part of some great teams in his career, but he says this years squad may be his best yet.
We have a lot of experience and we have a lot of talent, he said. We have a chance to be really special.
Madlock will be relying on senior leaders like guard Retin Obasohan and forward Michael Kessens to help the Crimson Tide reach their goals this season. Both players were named to the Preseason All-SEC team and are expected to be key contributors on both ends of the floor.
