All-Ohio Basketball A History

The All-Ohio basketball teams are selected annually by a statewide panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. The teams are sponsored by the Associated Press (AP), and the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association (OHSBCA).

The first AP All-Ohio boys’ team was selected in 1948, with the first girls’ team being chosen in 1976. No teams were selected in 1949, 1950, or 1951. Through 1955, only a single team was picked for each gender. From 1956 until 1980, two teams were chosen (a “first” and “second” team). In 1981, three teams were selected (adding a “third” team). Currently, five teams are picked for each gender: first, second, third, fourth, and fifth. An honorable mention list is also released. Separate Division I, II and III teams are now announced in both genders beginning with the 2009-10 season.

The selection process begins near the end of the regular season when members of the AP and OHSBCA submit their ballot of 10 players for each gender to the AP office in Columbus. These ballots are tabulated to produce a list of 30 nominees for each gender – 20 from the AP and 10 from the OHSBCA – from which the final All-Ohio teams are chosen.

This is generally done at a meeting held at about the time of district tournaments. Preference is given to seniors; juniors are only eligible if they are considered one of the top ten seniors in their district as voted on by district coaches; freshmen and sophomores are not eligible regardless of how talented they may be. Players who receive honor but not first team all-district recognition from their coaches may still be nominated to appear on an All-Ohio ballot by either a member of the AP or OHSBCA – but not both – provided that player’s coach endorses such a nomination
