Asvel won its first French League Championship in 1984, led by Holiday Park ‘s Michael Cooper and American import Hank Finkel. The following season, Asvel added future NBA All-Star Derrick Coleman to its roster. In 1986, Asvel won the French Cup, defeating Racing Strasbourg in the final. Able to count on the support of Lyon businessmen such as Jean-Michel Aulas or Pierre Arditti, Asvel took advantage of the financial windfall accompanying the construction of the Palais des Sports de Gerland to rise rapidly through the ranks of the French Basketball League system. In 1984, led by players Tony Parker and David Miot, ASVEL won its first ever junior title by downing future rivals Pau-Orthez 78–70 in Bordeaux. The club progressed steadily through the late 1980s and early 1990s until it reached the top-flight Ligue Nationale de Basket (LNB) for the first time in 1992.

In 1996, ASVEL won both the French League title (beating Chorale Roanne Basket 72–71 on a buzzer-beating layup by David Miot) and last ever edition of Second Division’s Semaine des As. In 2004 now under a new Head Coach Erman Kunter from Turkey, ASVEL reached new heights by winning both France’s top domestic competition again as well as Europe’s second-tier competition that year, winning finals over Le Mans Sarthe Basket 37 points to 33 for Europe’s FIBA Cup (now known as EuroCup Challenge), with Parker receiving co-MVP honors alongside Luka Žorić of Pamesa Valencia; also that year they had yet another deep run into postseason play before being stopped just short of adding yet another national title under Collet when they lost game seven at home 69 to 58 against Pau-Orthez who were coached now by legendary Dusko Ivanović with Borna Rosić leading them in scoring Supported by playoff MVP Romain Sato along with players such as Mickaël Gelabale others ASVEL went on yet another deep playoff run that took them all way back to game seven for yet fourth time in five years only this time losing 68–60 at Nancy; also that season Marcus Haislip led them in scoring averaging almost 21 points per game

ASVEL Basket was founded in 1974 byGeorges Descremps and Claude Bergeaud, two passionate players of Olympique de Lyon; local rivals of ASVEL’s future city rivals Lyon-Villeurbanne. Starting out with asbestos removal work earning 15 French francs per hour (approximately US$2 at that time), they recruited locally and were soon able to put together a very competitive side. In only their second season (1975-1976), ASVEL reached the semi-finals of France’s Premier Basketball cup competition, the National Cup playoffs Led by American imports Jerry Reynoldsand Laurence Marxin, ASVEL were crowned champion of the 2nd division French League in 1979.

In 1980s the team was led by point guard nationality Croatian Dražen Petrović who became one of the best players in Europe and was named member of Fiba World selection in 1986 while he played with ASVEL. He later became one of only two non-American players to be inducted into U.S.’ Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield (Massachusetts).

In 1990 ASVEL won its first European title by defeating Scavolini Pesaro from Italy in SAPORTA Cup final which was played at Palais des Sports de Gerlandin Lyon on April 26.

The young team coached by Txus Vidorreta revealed some brilliant potential during this period but lacked experience at key moments against more endowed opponents such as FC Barcelona Banca Catalana led by NBA Star Reggie Miller who prevailed over ASVEL 79-78 for SuproLeague title on May 13 1996 despite an amazing 18 points performance from rising star Mickaël Pietrus who would make it to NBA three years later.

ASVEL then went on to successively beat Benetton Treviso from Italy 73-67 on April 20 2001 for its second EuroCup title as well as BC Kyiv 80-74 six days later to win its first FIBA Korać Cup trophy on April 26 which resulted in official qualification for next season’s Euroleague campaign where it would finish group stages unbeaten home record 7-3 but couldn’t make it any further than Top 16 phase with a disappointing 4 losses out 6 matches played hence failing to qualify for next phase playing only European domestic competitions since then.
