Introducing the team

The Bergen Catholic Varsity Basketball team has a long tradition of success on the court, and this year’s squad is looking to continue that legacy. Led by captain and senior point guard Matt Farrell, the Crusaders are poised to make a run at the state championship Here’s a look at the team’s roster:

Matt Farrell – Senior, Point Guard
A four-year varsity player, Farrell is a two-time all-county selection and was named first team all-state as a junior. He is averaging 18 points, five assists and three rebounds per game this season.

Ryan Middletown – Junior, Shooting Guard
Middletown is in his second year on varsity and is one of the team’s top shooters. He is averaging 12 points per game

Mike Azzarito – Senior, Small Forward
Azzarito is a three-year varsity player and the team’s leading rebounder. He is averaging 10 points and eight rebounds per game

Sean Boyle – Senior, Power Forward
Boyle is a four-year varsity player and was named second team all-state as a junior. He is averaging 15 points and six rebounds per game this season.

The bench

There are plenty of talented players on the Bergen Catholic bench, and they could be called upon at any time during a game. Here’s a look at some of the Key Players who will be cheering on their teammates from the sidelines this season.

-Tommy Azzara: A 6’2″ guard, Tommy is a versatile player who can contribute in a variety of ways. He’s a good shooter and has the ability to drive to the basket and finish tough shots. Tommy is also an excellent defender, and his length makes him a tough player to score against.

-Will Bynum: Will is another 6’2″ guard who provides a spark off the bench for Bergen Catholic. He’s an excellent shooter with deep range, and he’s also a very good ball-handler. Will is a dangerous player in transition, and he has the ability to make plays for his teammates.

-Dylan O’Hara: Dylan is a 6’5″ forward who brings a lot of energy and hustle to the court. He’s not afraid to mix it up down low, and he has a nose for the ball on the glass. Dylan is also a good shooter from mid-range, and he has the ability to stretch the defense with his shooting.

-Sean Quinn: Sean is a 6’7″ forward who provides size and strength off the bench for Bergen Catholic. He’s very physical down low, and he’s an excellent rebounder. Sean is also capable of scoring with his back to the basket, and he has Good footwork in the post.

The coaching staff

The Bergen Catholic High School basketball team is led by Head Coach Dave Cecchini. He is assisted by Nick Tary and Matt Roche.

The history

Bergen Catholic high school is a private, all-male, college preparatory high school located in Oradell, New Jersey. The school is operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark. Founded in 1955, Bergen Catholic is one of the oldest Catholic High schools in the state of New Jersey. The school has an enrollment of over 1,200 students and a faculty of over 100. Bergen Catholic is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

The school’s sports teams are nicknamed the Crusaders and compete in the Big North Conference, an Athletic Conference made up of private and public high schools located in Bergen and Passaic Counties in New Jersey. The conference is overseen by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). The Crusaders basketball team has won four State Championships 1991, 1992, 1994 and 2002.

The fans

Bergen Catholic high school is located in Oradell, New Jersey. The school is a part of the Big North United Blue conference and competes in Non-Public Group 4 of the NJSIAA. The school has an enrollment of just over 800 students. The basketball team has been very successful in recent years winning the NJSIAA Non-Public A state championship in 2016 and 2017.

The tradition

The Bergen Catholic Basketball Program is one of the most storied and successful in all of high school basketball. The Crusaders have won numerous state and National Championships and have produced some of the game’s biggest stars. Today, the team is comprised of some of the best players in the country, each with their own unique skills and abilities. Get to know the team below.

The future

The future of the Bergen Catholic basketball team looks bright with a talented and deep roster. The Crusaders return four starters from last year’s team that made it to the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions semifinals. Headlining the group is senior point guard and Georgetown commit Jahvon Blair. Blair, who is currently ranked as the No. 48 player in the country by ESPN, will look to lead Bergen Catholic to a state title in his final season.

The other returning starters are seniors Matt Zona and Robert Askew, and junior Tyler Pierson. Zona, a North Carolina State commit, is a 6’8″ forward who can score inside and out. Askew, a 6’5″ wing, is an explosive athlete who can finish above the rim. Pierson, a 6’7″ forward, is a versatile player who can play both inside and out.

The Crusaders also have a talented group of reserves that includes seniors Kyle Devine and Dylan DeMelo and junior Thomas D’Angelo. Devine is a 6’2″ guard who can shoot the three-ball. DeMelo is a 6’6″ forward who brings energy and toughness off the bench. D’Angelo is a 6’1″ guard who can handle the ball and shoot from long range.

With its mix of experience and talent, Bergen Catholic looks poised to make another run at the Tournament of Champions title in 2020.
