It’s that time of year again! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as always, there are plenty of ways to get involved and show your support From buying special edition pink products to attending local fundraising events, there are lots of great ways to show your solidarity.
One of our favorite ways to support the cause is by purchasing basketball shoes that give back. During the month of October, many brands release special edition pink shoes with a portion of the proceeds going to support breast Cancer Research and awareness initiatives. What is breast cancer?
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the United States The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 36.
Breast cancer can occur in both men and women, but it’s far more common in women. About 2,470 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men this year. For women, the figure is about 265,000.
In 2018, there will be an estimated 40,920 deaths from breast cancer (24,280 deaths among women and 16,640 deaths among men).
How does breast cancer affect women?
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.
Approximately 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
In 2019, an estimated 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., as well as 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.2
About 2,670 men are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019.3
Although the incidence of breast cancer has been stable over the past few years, the number of deaths from this disease has been declining since 1989. This decline is believed to be the result of improvements in early detection (through screening mammography) and treatment.
How can you support breast cancer awareness month?
There are a number of ways you can support breast cancer awareness month. One way is to purchase basketball shoes that give back. Why is it important to support breast cancer awareness?
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and the second leading cause of cancer death in women. Each year, it is estimated that over 250,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die from the disease.
