Introducing the BYU baseball team – who they are and what they’ve accomplished
The Brigham Young University (BYU) Baseball Team is a Division I college baseball team in the United States The team is a member of the West Coast Conference and plays its home games at Larry H. Miller Field in Provo, Utah.
The team has been to the College World Series four times, most recently in 2016. They have won the West Coast Conference championship fourteen times, most recently in 2019.
The BYU baseball team is coached by Mike Littlewood. He has been the Head Coach since 2013. Prior to becoming the head coach he was an Assistant Coach at BYU from 2003 to 2012.
Some of the notable players who have played for BYU include Brandon Eyring, Stephen Wells, Eric Weaver, and MarkAnderson.
The journey to the College World Series – how BYU got there
The Brigham Young University (BYU) baseball team had an impressive run in the 2019 season, ultimately earning a spot in the College World Series This was no small feat – BYU had to win several key games and beat out some strong competition to get there. Here’s a look at the road that led BYU to the College World Series
In order to even be eligible for the College World Series teams have to first make it into the NCAA tournament BYU did this by winning the West Coast conference tournament The WCC tournament is a double-elimination format, meaning that a team has to lose two games before they’re out of contention. BYU won their first game against Pepperdine, then lost to San Diego This sent them into the loser’s bracket, where they had to win every game from then on out in order to keep their season alive. BYU did just that, winning five straight games – against Pepperdine, Gonzaga, San Diego and finally Loyola Marymount twice. This last victory earned them the WCC Championship Title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament
The NCAA tournament is made up of 64 teams total, which are divided into four brackets of 16 teams each. BYU was placed into the Louisville bracket and had to play Ole Miss in their first game. This was a close game but ultimately BYU came out on top with a score of 4-3. They then went on to play Indiana State which they easily won with a score of 11-1. This put them up against Louisville – the top seed in their bracket and a team that was widely favored to win the entire tournament. But BYU had other plans; they upset Louisville with a score of 6-3, earning themselves a spot in the Super Regional round.
In order for a team to make it from regionals all the way to Omaha for the College World Series they have to win what’s called a “super regional” series against another team. These best-of-three series are played at campus sites, meaning that one team gets to host all three games if they have a better record than their opponent or if they won their regional tournament as opposed to just being one of 16 host sites chosen ahead of time. Fortunately for BYU, they were able to host their Super Regional series against Mississippi State thanks to their strong performance up until that point. Unfortunately, Mississippi State ended up winning this series 2-1; so while BYU made it further than most teams do in the NCAA tournament their journey ended just short of Omaha.

Every year, the College World Series (CWS) is a highly anticipated event for baseball fans across the country. For the BYU baseball team it’s the culmination of a long journey that starts well before the first pitch is thrown.
The journey back – what happens after the College World Series
For BYU, making it to the CWS is only half the battle. The real challenge comes in trying to make it back again the following year. That’s because after every CWS appearance, the team loses key players to graduation or professional baseball This year will be no different, as BYU will have to replace key contributors such as slugger Brock Ziegler and pitcher Keaton Cenatiempo.
But despite these losses, BYU remains optimistic about its chances of return to Omaha. That’s because the team has a strong nucleus of returning players, led by All-American catcher Maddy Denson. With Denson and other Key Players leading the way, BYU is confident it can make another run at the CWS in 2020.
