Contents
Did you know that there are three California Hockey teams in the NHL? The Anaheim Ducks Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks all call California home.
The Anaheim Ducks
The Anaheim Ducks are a professional ice Hockey Team in the National Hockey League (NHL), and are based in Anaheim, California. The Ducks play their home games at Honda Center. They are members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference
The Ducks were founded in 1993 by The Walt Disney Company as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, one of the several expansion teams surgically placed around America to grow interest in hockey as part of The Walt Disney Company’s Orlando-based Mighty Ducks movies franchise. Through the rest of the 1990s, Anaheim saw little success under new ownership; making the playoffs only twice during the decade and never advancing beyond the second round. In 2006, after new management bought out the Walt Disney Company’s stake in Club ownership, the team was renamed to simply “Anaheim Ducks”, with a new logo representing duck feet and webbing replacing both former logos. A Stanley Cup championship in 2007 followed shortly thereafter
Since their Stanley Cup victory, however, they have not made any significant playoff runs, falling short many times.
The Los Angeles Kings
The Los Angeles Kings are a professional Ice Hockey team based in Los Angeles They are members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Kings’ home rink is Staples Center which they share with their local NBA rival, the Los Angeles Clippers The franchise began on 1966 as an expansion team along with the Minnesota North Stars and the Pittsburgh Penguins The Kings have appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals three times, winning twice in 2012 and 2014.
The San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks are a professional ice Hockey Team based in San Jose California. They are members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Sharks began play in 1991 as an expansion team, and have made the playoffs 21 times in their 25 seasons.
The Sharks have advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals five times, losses in 1994 and 2016. They have won the Presidents’ Trophy three times (2008–09, 2015–16, 2016–17), as the NHL’s overall regular season champions, and division championships five times (1993–94, 1995 , 2002 –03 , 2008–09 , 2015 –16 ), most recently inshowing year . The Sharks name originates from the large number of great white sharks that inhabit nearby San Francisco Bay.
The California Golden Seals
The California Golden Seals were a professional Ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1967 to 1976. Originally based in the San Francisco Bay Area the team moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1976 and became the Cleveland Barons. The franchise was eventually merged with the Minnesota North Stars
The Seals were one of six teams added to the NHL in the 1967 expansion, along with the Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota North Stars Pittsburgh Penguins Philadelphia Flyers and St. Louis Blues Based in Oakland, California, they played their home games at the Oakland Coliseum Arena (later known as the Oracle Arena). The Coliseum was shared with the National Football League’s Oakland Raiders until 1971 when baseball’s Oakland Athletics took over as co-tenants for two seasons before relocating elsewhere.
The Seals never particularly well on the ice, posting only two winning seasons in their nine-year existence; they failed to make the playoffs six times and never advanced beyond the second round of the playoffs. Attendance was also poor at times; after averaging almost 11,000 fans per game during their first season, they only averaged 5,493 during their final season in Oakland. They sold poorly on television; while other NHL Teams had begun televising some games during the early 1970s, it would be another decade before any Seals games were televised.
The Oakland Seals
The Oakland Seals were a professional ice hockey team that played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1967 to 1976. Based in Oakland, California, they were formed as a result of the NHL’s expansion into the San Francisco Bay Area The Seals were one of six teams added to the league in the 1967 NHL Expansion Their home rink was the Oakland Coliseum Arena.
The Seals were never successful on the ice, making the playoffs only twice in their nine-year existence. They had only one winning season, and never finished higher than fourth place in their division. The Seals suffered from poor attendance; their home games were played in front of empty seats far more often than not. In an effort to address this problem, the team was sold to new owners who changed its name and colors, but it did not improve matters much, and the team only lasted three more years before relocating again.

The NHL and California Hockey
Since 1967, when the Los Angeles Kings joined the National Hockey League California has been home to eight different NHL teams The state has produced some of the most iconic figures in NHL history including Wayne Gretzky who is widely considered to be the greatest player of all time.
California has also played host to some of the most memorable moments in NHL history In 2014, the Kings won their second Stanley Cup championship in three years, cementing their place as one of the league’s premier franchises.
With eight teams spread across the state, California is home to more NHL teams than any other state in the US. If you’re a hockey fan there’s no better place to be than California.
The Future of California Hockey
The National Hockey League (NHL) currently has no teams located in California, but that could soon change. Two Expansion Teams are set to join the NHL in the near future, one in Seattle and one in Las Vegas There has been talk of a third expansion team, and if that team were to be located in California, it would mark the first time the state has had an NHL team since the San Jose Sharks joined the league in 1991.
There are several cities that have been rumored as potential homes for a California-based NHL team including Los Angeles Anaheim, and San Francisco However, it is unclear whether any of these cities have enough interest or support from potential fans to sustain an NHL team It is also unclear whether there would be enough interest from local businesses to support an NHL franchise.
Only time will tell if California will once again be home to an NHL Team but it is certainly possible that we could see hockey return to the state in the near future.
The Importance of California Hockey
While California is not typically known for its Hockey Teams there are several teams in the NHL that call California home. These teams are important to the state for a number of reasons.
First, hockey is a popular sport in California, and having teams in the state ensures that there is always a local team to support. Second, these teams bring in revenue to the state through ticket sales merchandise sales, and other forms of revenue. Third, these teams provide employment for Californians both directly and indirectly. Finally, these teams help to raise the profile of California as a whole, both nationally and internationally.
Californian hockey fans have a lot to be proud of, and the state’s hockey teams are an important part of the state’s economy and culture.
