Introducing Colorado Mesa Basketball

The Colorado Mesa Mavericks are a NCAA Division II Basketball team representing Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction Colorado. The Mavericks are members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference They play their home games at Brownson Arena, on campus in Grand Junction.

The program began in 1925, and has participated in three NCAA Division II Tournaments (1984, 1985, 2002). The Mavericks have also appeared in the National Invitation Tournament three times (1980, 1981, 1984). Their overall record is 1120-953 (.540), and they have made the RMAC tournament 25 times.

Under current head coach Jim Heaps, the Mavericks have compiled a 20-10 record and won the RMAC regular season championship in 2016-17. The arena was built in 1976 and originally had a capacity of 1,500 people. It was expanded to its current capacity of 3,500 people in 1996. The expansion added new seating, a new floor, and a new scoreboard.

The Brownson Arena is named after former Colorado Mesa men’s basketball coach Jim Brownson. Coach Brownson coached at Colorado Mesa from 1970 to 1983 and led the Mavericks to four NCAA Division II tournament appearances.
