The history of the Culver-Stockton college baseball program
Culver-Stockton College is a small school located in Canton, Missouri. It is a private, four-year liberal arts institution that was founded in 1853. The school has an enrollment of just over 1,000 students and is affiliated with the Methodist Church. Despite its small size, Culver-Stockton College has a long and proud tradition in baseball.
The Culver-Stockton College baseball program has its roots in the late 19th century. The first recorded game took place in 1889 against Highland Park College, now known as Iowa Wesleyan University The game was played on what was then known as Athletic Field, which was located on the South Side of campus near where Tullis Hall stands today. Highland Park won the game by a score of 9-3.
Over the next few decades, the Culver-Stockton Baseball Team played sporadically against other colleges and universities in the region. In 1908, the team played games against both Notre Dame and Iowa State University In 1909, 1910 and 1911, the team competed in what was known as the Midwest Intercollegiate baseball league (MIBL). The league included such schools as Grinnell College Knox College, Monmouth College and Wesleyan University
The first half of the 20th century saw sporadic success for the Culver-Stockton baseball team In 1922, the team had its first winning season with a record of 11-9. In 1925, 1927 and 1929, the team won conference championships in the MIBL. In 1931 and 1932, Culver-Stockton again had winning seasons with records of 10-7 and 12-4 respectively.
After more than 30 years without a conference affiliation, Culver-Stockton joined forces with nine other schools to form the Midwest Collegiate Conference (MCC) in 1954. The conference included such schools as Augustana College (now Augustana University), Carroll College (now Carroll University), Graceland University (now Graceland University) and St Ambrose University (now St Ambrose University).
In 1957, under Head Coach Austin Gardner, Culver-Stockton won its first MCC Baseball Championship with a record of 16-5 overall and 9-3 in conference play The team made it back to the MCC Championship game in 1958 but lost to St Ambrose by a score of 5-3. From 1960 to 1967 inclusive, Culver-Stockton made seven straight appearances in the MCC Championship game but failed to win another title during that stretch..
