Cushing Academy is a top preparatory school in Massachusetts that has a long tradition of excellence in hockey. The school has produced many NHL players including Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara and Buffalo Sabres captain Brian Gionta. Cushing is also known for its strong development program, which has produced several USA Hockey national team members.

The History of Cushing Academy Hockey

Cushing Academy Hockey is one of the most celebrated and successful programs in all of high school hockey With a long history of success, Cushing Academy has produced some of the best players in the game, many of whom have gone on to have successful careers in the NHL.

The program was started in 1893 by headmaster Frederic T. Lyon, who is credited with being one of the pioneers of organized high school hockey in the United States The first game was played against Lawrence Academy another prep school that was also founded by Lyon. Cushing won that game by a score of 2-1, and the rivalry between the two schools has been one of the most heated in all of high school hockey ever since.

Cushing went on to win the first interscholastic championship in 1895, and they would go on to win 11 more championships over the next 25 years. During that time period, Cushing also produced a number of NHL greats, including Hall of Famers Frank Brimsek, Charlie Mason and Bill Cowley.

In recent years Cushing has continued to be one of the top programs in high school hockey winning 5 more championships since 1995. With a rich history and a tradition of excellence, Cushing Academy hockey is truly one of the best programs in all of High School hockey.

The Cushing Academy Hockey Program

The Cushing Academy Hockey Program is deeply rooted in tradition and excellence. Founded in 1890, Cushing was one of the first schools in the country to offer organized Ice Hockey From its humble beginnings on a small pond in Ashburnham, Massachusetts, the program has grown to become one of the premier high school hockey programs in New England.

Cushing’s success on the ice is well-documented. The program has produced 12 NHL Draft picks (most recently, Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Ryan McDonagh in 2007), 37 Division I college hockey players, and countless other professional, collegiate, and junior Hockey Players alumni have gone on to play for some of the most successful teams in college and professional hockey including the University of Michigan (6 players), University of North Dakota (4 players), Boston College (3 players), Denver Pioneers (3 players), Boston Bruins (2 players), Detroit Red Wings (2 players), Montreal Canadiens (2 players), Pittsburgh Penguins (2 players), Toronto Maple Leafs (2 players), Chicago Blackhawks (1 player) Colorado Avalanche (1 player) Edmonton Oilers (1 player) New York Islanders (1 player) New York Rangers (1 player)

The Cushing program has also had tremendous success at thepelled by current Head Coach Rob Riley ’83. In his 15 seasons behind the bench, Riley has guided the team to 11 New England Prep School Hockey Association tournament appearances, six Final Fours, four Elite Eights, and three trips to the NEPSAC Championship game In 2007-08, he led Cushing to its first ever NEPSAC Class A championship and was named NEPSHAA Coach of the Year. Under Riley’s guidance, 23 Cushing Academy student-athletes have gone on to play Division I college hockey most recent accomplishment came in 2015-16 when he led the Penguins to a 27-4-2 record and their second NEPSAC Class A championship in school history. In addition to his Prep School coaching responsibilities, Riley also serves as an Assistant Coach for Team USA’s Under-18 National Team Development Program

Cushing Academy is a private boarding school located in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. The school was founded in 1865 and it currently enrolls about 500 students from grades 9-12. Cushing Academy is known for its excellent academics and its Hockey Team

The Cushing Academy Hockey Team has won numerous championships over the years, including the prestigious New England Prep School Championship in 2012. The team is made up of talented student-athletes who are dedicated to their sport. Many of the team’s members go on to play college hockey at top schools such as Harvard, Dartmouth, and Boston College

The Cushing Academy Hockey Schedule is packed with games against some of the best teams in the country. The schedule includes games against traditional powers like Boston College Northeastern, and Clarkson, as well as up-and-coming programs like Providence and UConn. No matter who the opponent is, Cushing is always ready to compete at the highest level

Player Bio: John is a senior at Cushing Academy and has been with the program for four years. He is a strong two-way player that can contribute offensively and defensively. John is committed to play Division I hockey at Northeastern University next year.

Name: Jane Doe
Hometown: Greenwich, CT
Player Bio: Jane is a junior at Cushing Academy and this will be her third year with the program. She is an offensive threat that opponents need to be aware of when she’s on the ice. Jane has verbally committed to play Division I hockey at Boston College next year.

The Cushing Academy Hockey Coaches

Since 1900, the Cushing Academy Hockey program has been built on a foundation of hard work determination, and excellence. The coaches of the Cushing Academy Hockey Program have played a big role in shaping the culture and tradition of the program and the school.

Head coach Danton Cole has been at the helm of the Cushing program for 14 years. During his time at Cushing, Cole has led the team to two New England Prep school hockey Association (NEPSHWA) championships, in 2006 and 2013. He has also been named NEPSHA Coach of the Year three times, in 2006, 2010, and 2012. Cole is a former professional hockey player who played for both the United States National Team and several NHL Teams including the Detroit Red Wings Tampa Bay Lightning and Chicago Blackhawks

Assistant coach Sean Tremblay is in his 12th season with the Cushing Academy Hockey program Tremblay was a four-year varsity player at Cushing Academy before going on to play collegiately at Dartmouth College. He was part of Dartmouth’s NCAA championship team in 1990. After college, Tremblay played Professional Hockey for several years before returning to Cushing to join Cole’s Coaching Staff

Goalie coach Kevin Regan is in his 9th season with the Cushing Academy hockey program Regan is a former goaltender who played collegiately at Harvard University He was part of Harvard’s NCAA championship team in 2006. After college, Regan played professional hockey for several years before returning to Cushing to join Cole’s coaching staff

The Cushing Academy hockey coaches are some of the most experienced and successful coaches in prep school hockey They have helped shape the culture and tradition of excellence that has defined the Cushing Academy hockey program for over 100 years.

The Cushing Academy Hockey Facilities

The Cushing Academy hockey facilities are some of the finest in the country. The school has two full-size ice rinks, one regulation and one Olympic-sized, as well as a state-of-the-art training facility. The facility is open to students and staff seven days a week and is available for open skate, drop-in hockey, and private rentals.

In addition to the outstanding facilities, Cushing Academy also has a long tradition of excellence in hockey. The school has produced numerous NHL Players including Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara and Tampa Bay Lightning forward Tyler Johnson Cushing Academy is also a perennial powerhouse at the high school level, winning five New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) championships in the last ten years.

The Cushing Academy Hockey program has produced many Great players over the years. Notable alumni include Joe Mullen ’78, Darren Turcotte ’87, Chris Drury ’94, and Matt Gilroy ’05. Each of these players went on to have successful careers in the NHL.

The Cushing Academy hockey fans are some of the most dedicated and passionate fans in all of high school hockey. They travel to away games, sometimes hundreds of miles, to support their team. And they do it all with a smile on their face and a positive attitude
