David Phelps was born in Baton Rouge Louisiana, on October 9, 1986. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 14th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball draft. In 2007, he was named the Yankees’ minor league Pitcher of the Year after going 12-4 with a 2.46 ERA in 28 games (27 starts) between Single-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton.
Phelps made his Major League debut with the Yankees on April 7, 2012. In 2013, he became a regular member of the starting rotation. In 2014, he was transitioned to a relief role. He finished his Yankee career with a 29-30 record and a 4.50 ERA in 138 games (60 starts).
On July 31, 2016, Phelps was traded to the Miami Marlins for prospects Domingo German and Nathan Eovaldi. He enjoyed success with his new club, going 8-6 with a 2.28 ERA in 28 games (19 starts) for the Marlins in 2016. Phelps continued to be a key member of the Marlins’ pitching staff in 2017, going 7-6 with a 3.40 ERA in 33 games (16 starts).
On February 7, 2018, Phelps was traded back to the Yankees for prospects Jorge Guzman and Jose Devers. He recorded a 4.28 ERA in 37 games (four starts) for New York before being traded again on July 25, 2018, this time to the Seattle Mariners for international slot money. He struggled following the trade to Seattle, posting an 0-4 record and an 8.34 ERA in 19 games (two starts) for the Mariners down the stretch of the 2018 season.

Phelps grew up in Texas, and was a two-sport star in High School playing both baseball and football He played college baseball at Notre Dame and was drafted by the Yankees after his junior year.
