The Tigers finished the 18-19 season with an overall record of 15-13, including a 9-7 mark in conference play That record was good enough for a fourth-place finish in the NCAC standings.
The 2019-20 season was even more successful for the Tigers, as they finished with an overall record of 20-8, including a 12-4 mark in conference play That record was good enough for a second-place finish in the NCAC standings and earned the team a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Depauw Men’s Basketball: The New Standard
The Depauw men’s basketball team is one of the most improved teams in the country. After a disappointing 2016-2017 season, in which the team went 6-22, Depauw has bounced back in a big way. The team is now 18-8 and has already clinched a spot in the postseason.
What has been the biggest key to the team’s turnaround?
Head coach Greg Tonagel believes it has been a combination of factors.
“I think it starts with our seniors,” Tonagel said. “They’ve done a great job of setting the tone for our program both on and off the court. They’re great leaders and they’ve really helped our younger guys buy into what we’re trying to do here.”
Tonagel also believes that the team’s improved play can be attributed to its increased focus on defense. The team is now allowing just 64 points per game which is a significant improvement from last season when it gave up over 75 points per contest.
“We’ve emphasized defense from day one and I think our guys have really bought into that,” Tonagel said. “Our goal is to be one of the best Defensive Teams in the country and I think we’re making strides in that direction.”
With the postseason just around the corner, Tonagel and his squad are hoping to make some noise and prove that they are indeed one of the best teams in the country.
