Forbes Ranks the Most Valuable College Basketball Teams

Forbes has released their annual rankings of the most valuable college basketball teams and there are some surprises near the top.

In its annual ranking of the most valuable College Basketball teams, Forbes has again named the University of Kentucky Wildcats as the #1 most valuable team in the sport. The Wildcats are worth an estimated $171 million, which is up 8% from last year.

Rounding out the top five are the UCLA Bruins ($157 million), the Louisville Cardinals ($149 million), the North Carolina Tar Heels ($120 million), and the Kansas Jayhawks ($113 million).

Forbes attributes Kentucky’s value increase to a new 10-year, $78 million broadcast rights deal with ESPN that will begin in 2025. The deal is reportedly the largest in College Basketball history.

UCLA, meanwhile, benefits from having the nation’s second-most popular Basketball Program (behind only Kentucky) as well as a $136 million licensing agreement with Under Armour.

In order to determine the most valuable College Basketball teams, Forbes looked at revenue and operating income for the 2017-2018 season The magazine also took into account each team’s value to its university, its local economy and its conference.

Duke, which had the highest revenue and operating income of any team in the nation last season, topped the list with a value of $4 billion. The Blue Devils were followed by Kentucky ($3.2 billion), Kansas ($1.8 billion), North Carolina ($1.7 billion) and Louisville ($1.5 billion).

The rest of the top 10 most valuable teams were Notre Dame ($1.3 billion), Indiana ($1.2 billion), UCLA ($963 million), Wisconsin ($949 million) and Michigan State ($857 million).

With the college Basketball season in Full Swing it’s time to take a look at the most valuable teams in the sport. Forbes recently released its list of the most valuable college basketball teams, and there are some surprising results.

At the top of the list is Kentucky, which is valued at $246 million. That’s almost double the value of the next most valuable team, Louisville, which is worth $131 million. UCLA rounds out the top three with a value of $128 million.

The rankings are based on a number of factors, including revenue, operating income, and revenue per fan. factors. Kentucky generated $43 million in revenue last season and had an operating income of $15 million. That works out to a revenue per fan of $205.

Louisville was second in revenue with $40 million, but generated just $5 million in operating income. That works out to a revenue per fan of just $60. UCLA was third in both measures, generating $36 million in revenue and $12 million in operating income.

These rankings show that Kentucky is far and away the most valuable college basketball team Louisville may have a higher value when it comes to things like brand recognition or historic success, but when it comes to generating revenue and profit, Kentucky is king.

In its annual ranking of the most valuable college basketball teams Forbes has once again placed Louisville at the top of the list. The Cardinals are worth an estimated $52 million, followed by Kentucky ($48 million) and UCLA ($40 million).

Rounding out the top five are North Carolina ($34 million) and Kansas ($32 million). Ohio State Duke, Indiana, Syracuse, and Connecticut complete the top ten

Forbes notes that while Louisville remains the most valuable team, Kentucky has seen the biggest increase in value over the past year, thanks in part to a new $275 million arena. UCLA has also seen a significant increase in value, thanks to a new TV deal with ESPN.
