Gannon’s recent successes

The team is led by Head Coach John Reilly, who was named the 2017 Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. Coach Reilly has led Gannon to a 73-27 record over the last three seasons.

Head coach John called Powers is in his sixth season at the helm of the program, and has led the team to five 20-win seasons. His wife, associate head coach Kate Powers, is also in her sixth season with the team. The two have worked together to build a culture of success within the program.

Assistant coach Joe Hlavacik is in his third season with the Gannon Basketball Program He has played a key role in recruiting and game planning, and has helped the team to two NCAA Division II tournament appearances.

The fourth member of the coaching staff is Director of Operations Mike Baranek. Baranek joined the team in 2016, and has helped with on-campus recruiting,OFF-campus recruiting, and player development

The Golden Knights have seen a dramatic increase in their win total over the past few seasons and are now considered one of the top Division II programs in the country. In addition to their success on the court, Gannon has also made significant upgrades to their facilities, which has helped attract top prospects from all over the country.

Golden Knights currently play their home games at the Hammermill Center, which underwent a $2 million renovation prior to the start of the 2016-17 season The state-of-the-art facility features a brand new court, updated locker rooms and a spacious weight room that is available for use by all Gannon students. In addition to the Hammermill Center, Gannon also has access to a practice gym and an on-campus arena that can seat over 5,000 fans.

In the PSAC, the Golden Knights compete against Mercyhurst, Edinboro, Indiana (PA), Clarion, West Chester East Stroudsburg Kutztown and Shippensburg. In the Atlantic Region, Gannon is joined by such traditional powerhouses as IUP, Pittsburgh-Johnstown, California (PA), Slippery Rock and Seton Hill

Gannon will open its 2021-22 season against crosstown rival Mercyhurst on Nov. 12 at the Hammermill Center. The Lakers will be one of four PSAC schools on the Golden Knights’ non-Conference Schedule along with Edinboro (Nov. 23), Kutztown (Dec. 4) and West Chester (Dec. 11).

The Golden Knights will participate in the 2021 adidas D-II Men’s Basketball Showcase announced Thursday by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), from Dec. 17-19 at a site to be determined. The annual event features eight of the top NCAA Division II men’s basketball programs in eight different cities across the country playing four regular-season games each on back-to-back nights. This year’s field features reigning National Champion IUPUI, as well as Drury, Hillsdale, Lincoln Memorial Queens (N.C.), Rogers State Southern Nazarene and West Liberty

Additional highlights of Gannon’s schedule include home games against Mercyhurst (Nov. 12), Edinboro (Nov. 23), Kutztown (Dec. 4) and West Chester (Dec. 11); a road game at Indiana (Pa.) on Jan 6; and home contests against Pitt-Johnstown (Jan 16) and Mercyhurst (Feb 3).

Gannon’s post-season prospects

In just its fourth season in Division I, the Gannon men’s basketball team is continuing to make noise on the national stage.

The Golden Knights, who went 18-16 last season and lost in the first round of the Atlantic Sun conference tournament are receiving votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls.

Gannon is coming off a season in which it set a program record for wins and reached the Conference Tournament for the first time. The Golden Knights have also won 20 or more games in three of their last four seasons.
