GCU Basketball Schedule: What You Need to Know

The Lopes will play 32 regular season games, 16 of which will be at home in the GCU Arena
The season will tip off on November 5th at home against San Diego Christian and will end on March 7th against Grand Canyon’s biggest rival, Arizona State University

The Team

The Grand Canyon University Antelopes men’s basketball team is currently in their 8th season of Division I play and 5th as a member of the WAC Conference The team is led by HC Dan Majerle, who is in his 7th season as Head Coach The team has 3 seniors, 6 juniors, 6 sophomores, and 5 freshmen. The starting 5 for the ‘Lopes this season are F Justin Jackson, G Oscar Frayer, G Michael Finke, G Matt Holiday, and F Alessandro Lever.

The Fans

Some people may not realize how important fans are to a Basketball team That’s right, the fans. Without the fans, there would be no games. The fans are the ones who buy the tickets, watch the games on TV, and listen to them on the radio. They are the ones who support their team through thick and thin.

GCU’s fans are some of the best in the country. They are always there cheering their team on to victory. They are loud, proud, and passionate about their team. GCU’s fans make sure that their team knows that they are behind them 100%.

The Arena

The Arena, home of the Grand Canyon University Lopes men’s and women’s basketball teams is located on the GCU campus in Phoenix, Arizona. The facility opened in 2011 and has a capacity of 7,000 fans. The Lopes have played their home games at the Arena since it opened and have been very successful, winning conference championships and making several NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Coaches

The Grand Canyon University Basketball Coaching Staff is made up of head coach Dan Majerle, associate Head Coach Matt Gordon, assistant coaches Bryce Drew and Greg Foster and director of player personnel Andre Lafleur. The staff has a wealth of experience and knowledge about the game of basketball and they are committed to helping the team reach its full potential.

Head Coach Dan Majerle is a GCU alum and a former NBA player He has been the Head coach at GCU since 2013, and he has led the team to two NCAA tournament appearances. Associate head coach Matt Gordon has been on Majerle’s staff since 2014, and he has helped the team to two WAC regular season championships. Assistant Coach Bryce Drew is also a GCU alum, and he has been on Majerle’s staff since 2015. He was instrumental in helping the team to its first ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2018. assistant coach Greg Foster has been with the program since 2016, and he has helped the team to two WAC Regular Season championships. Director of player personnel Andre Lafleur rounds out the Coaching Staff and he has been with the program since 2017.

The Rivalries

The Grand Canyon University (GCU) men’s basketball team is one of the top collegiate programs in the country. The team has made the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament nine times, including six times in the last seven years. In addition, GCU has won the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) regular season championship five times and the WAC Tournament Championship four times.

As for the women’s team, they are currently fighting for a spot in the WAC tournament. They are sitting in seventh place and need to finish in the top six to qualify for the tournament. The women’s team will be back in action on Saturday, March 3rd at 2:00 pm against Grand Canyon University. This will be their last regular season home game as well, so make sure to come out and show your support!
