How the Ghsa Basketball Playoffs Work
The GHSA Basketball Playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held each year to determine the State Champions of Georgia’s high school basketball teams The tournament consists of four rounds: the region rounds, the state quarterfinals, the state semifinals, and the state championship game.
In each of the first three rounds, 16 teams are seeded based on their records from the regular season The higher-seeded team is given home-court advantage and will play host to the lower-seeded team in each matchup. The quarterfinals and semifinals are held at pre-determined sites around the state, while the Championship game is always played at Georgia Tech’s McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta.
The first round of the playoffs is known as “region play.” In this round, all 16 seeds are placed into four different regions around the state. The top seed in each region will play host to the 16th seed, the 2nd seed will play host to the 15th seed, and so on. The winners of these games will advance to the state quarterfinals, where they will be reseeded based on their records.
In the quarterfinals, matchups are determined by a simple drawing of seeds: 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5. These games are again played at home sites determined by record with higher seeds hosting. The four winners advance to semifinal play at pre-determined sites around Georgia.
The final two rounds ofGHSA play are single elimination and hosted at predetermined sites regardless of seed or record. In the semifinals, 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 seeds square off with a trip to McCamish Pavilion on the line. The two winners advance to Georgia Tech forthe state championship game with a chance to make history and take home a title!
