The Impact of College Baseball
In recent years College Baseball has seen a meteoric rise in popularity. And as the sport continues to grow, more and more top-tier athletes are choosing to pursue careers in college baseball instead of going straight to the pros.
This trend was on full display at the most recent major league baseball draft, where a record-breaking 29 former college baseball players were selected in the first round. That’s more than double the number of college players taken in the first round just five years ago.
Clearly, college baseball is having a moment. And that moment is only going to get bigger in 2022 when Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers hosts the College World Series
This will be the first time that the College World Series is played in a Major League ballpark, and it’s sure to be a special event for everyone involved. From the athletes to the coaches to the fans, everyone will be able to experience firsthand what makes college baseball so great.
So what exactly is it about college baseball that has everyone so excited? Let’s take a look at some of the key reasons why this sport is on the rise:
1. The level of play is extremely high.
2. The atmosphere at college baseball games is electric.
3. College baseball players are some of the most down-to-earth athletes you’ll ever meet.
4. There’s a lot of parity in college baseball which means any team can win on any given day.
5. The College World Series is one of the most exciting sporting events out there.
If you’re not already a fan of College Baseball these reasons should be enough to convince you to give it a try. And with the sport only continuing to grow in popularity, there’s never been a better time to jump on board.
The Legacy of College Baseball
College baseball has a rich history in the United States with the first game being played in 1859 between Amherst College and Williams College. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity and today there are over 1,200 college baseball programs across the country.
The 2022 season will mark a special milestone for college baseball as Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas will host the College World Series for the first time. The new home of the Texas Rangers is just one of many state-of-the-art facilities that have been built in recent years to accommodate the growing popularity of college baseball
With more fans than ever before tuning in to watch college baseball both on television and online, the sport shows no signs of slowing down. Globe Life Field will provide a world-class setting for some of the best players in the country to showcase their talents on the biggest stage.
The Business of College Baseball
While smaller schools are content to play in modestly-sized ballparks, the majority of college baseball teams call stadiums that seat at least 10,000 fans home. A few, like LSU and Arkansas, play in front of crowds that regularly exceed 10,000. Most of these schools generate revenue through a combination of ticket sales concessions, merchandise, and broadcasting rights.
This is big business. In 2017, the SEC generated $616 million in revenue from its television contracts alone. The conference distributed $40.9 million to its member schools that year. The distribution was not equal; Alabama received $27.3 million while Vanderbilt got $12.6 million. But even the bottom school in the SEC was paid nearly three times as much as the average school in the American Athletic Conference ($4.5 million).
The figures are similar in other revenue sports. In 2019, the Atlantic Coast Conference distributed just over $27 million to each of its 15 member schools from its football television contract. The Eastern Conference paid its 14 member schools an average of $43 million apiece from its football contract that same year; Alabama received a little over $56 million while Kentucky got just under $34 million.
While these numbers are eye-popping, it’s important to remember that most schools do not generate enough revenue to cover their expenses. In 2016-17, the average Division I school generated $46 million in revenue but spent $56 million on athletics. In other words, they had to subsidize their athletics programs with money from other sources – primarily student fees and university support (i.e., taxpayer dollars).
The Future of Globe Life Field
In 2022, Globe Life Field will host the college baseball Classic, featuring some of the nation’s top college baseball programs. The four-team tournament will include LSU, Texas, TCU, and Arkansas. The event is a partnership between Major League Baseball and the NCAA.
This is great news for Globe Life Field and the city of Arlington. The ballpark was designed with college baseball in mind, and it will be a perfect venue for this tournament. This event will bring in millions of dollars of revenue to the city and help put Arlington on the map as a college baseball town.
We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Globe Life Field!
