Haverford College’s baseball team is made up of some of the best and most promising young athletes in the country. Get to know them better with this guide to the team’s roster.
#Pitcher
Sean Carley – Sean is a senior pitcher from Malvern, Pennsylvania. He attended Malvern Prep School where he played baseball and soccer. Sean is a two-time All-American and was named the Centennial Conference Freshman of the Year in 2016.
Tommy Bergjans – Tommy is a junior pitcher from San Dimas California. He attended Damien High School where he was a three-time All-CIF Division 2 selection. Tommy was named the Conference Pitcher of the Year as a junior and was a Perfect Game/Rawlings All-American as a senior.
Will Karp – Will is a sophomore pitcher from Concord, Massachusetts. He attended The Rivers School where he was named an All-American by Perfect Game/Rawlings as well as being named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Massachusetts. Will was also a member of Team USA’s 18U national team
#Catcher
Ethan Phillips – Ethan is a sophomore catcher from Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. He attended Harriton high school where he was named an All-Main Line selection by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Ethan was also a member of Team USA’s 18U National Team
Matt Chanin – Matt is a junior catcher from Boca Raton, Florida. He attended Saint Andrew’s School where he was named an All-American by Perfect Game/Rawlings as well as being named a Rawlings-perfect game Preseason First Team All-American. Matt was also drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 33rd round of the 2017 MLB Draft but decided to attend Haverford College instead.
The Infield
The infield is the area of the field closest to the batter. It is made up of four positions: first base, second base, third base and shortstop. The first baseman’s job is to catch balls hit near him and to tag runners out as they attempt to reach first base. The second baseman’s job is to catch balls hit his way and to turn double plays with the shortstop. The shortstop’s job is to catch balls hit his way and to turn double plays with the second baseman. The third baseman’s job is to catch balls hit his way and also to make plays at first base.
The Outfield
The Haverford College Baseball Team has a strong outfield this season. Senior captain Matt Hanlan leads the way in center field, flanked by junior All-American Matt Jeffries in left and sophomore sensation Mike Guerra in right.
Hanlan, a four-year starter, is one of the best defensive outfielders in the Centennial Conference. He’s also a steady hitter at the top of the lineup, with a career batting average of .302. Jeffries is one of the most dynamic players in Division III baseball He was named American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division III National Player of the Year last season after leading Haverford to the NCAA Division III World Series Guerra is a gifted all-around athlete who was an all-state performer in high school He’s hitting .338 with five home runs and 19 RBI so far this season.
The Pitchers
Pitchers are the backbone of any baseball team They have the important job of throwing the ball to the batter, and they need to have a good arm and good control to be successful. The Haverford College baseball team has a number of talented pitchers on its roster, and here is a look at some of them.
Matthew Sittig is a senior from Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. He is a right-handed pitcher who has been with the team for four years. Sittig has appeared in 24 games in his career, starting in eight of them. He has a career record of 5-4 with an ERA of 4.32. Sittig has also struck out 55 batters in his career.
Another senior pitcher is Max Weinstein from Merion Station, Pennsylvania. Weinstein is a left-handed pitcher who has appeared in 19 games in his career, starting in ten of them. He has a career record of 3-3 with an ERA of 4.50. Weinstein has also struck out 50 batters in his career.
Junior pitcher Nick Perez is from San Diego California. Perez is a right-handed pitcher who has appeared in 14 games in his career, starting in two of them. Perez has a career record of 1-0 with an ERA of 3.86. Perez has also struck out 18 batters in his career.
Sophomore pitcher Alec Mendez is from Clarks Summit Pennsylvania. Mendez is a right-handed pitcher who has appeared in 13 games in his career, starting six of them. Mendez has a career record of 4-1 with an ERA of 2.70. Mendez has also struck out 42 batters in his career.
The Catchers
The Haverford College Baseball Team has five catchers on its roster. They are:

The Coaches
Pat McMillin enters his fifth season as Head Coach of the Haverford College Baseball team in 2019. McMillin has racked up 72 victories during his first four years leading the program, including a school-record 30-win campaign in 2016. That year, the Fords also reached the 30-win mark for just the third time in school history and won their first season game since 2005.
