HBU’s 2019 Baseball Roster

The Houston Baptist University’s baseball team is back for another season and they have brought some of the best young talent in the nation with them. The team is led by Head Coach Craig Strobel, who has been with the program since its inception in 2012. The 2019 roster features 21 players from across the United States Canada and Puerto Rico The team is made up of 12 pitchers, six infielders, two outfielders and one utility player.

Riley Cornelius – Catcher
A local product out of Cypress Ranch High School Cornelius looks to make an immediate impact behind the plate for the Huskies. A hard-working player with a passion for the game, Cornelius has been praised by coaches for his leadership qualities.

Derek De Los Santos – Infielder
De Los Santos comes to HBU after a successful career at San Jacinto College A versatile infielder, De Los Santos provides a steadying presence in the middle of the diamond. He is a tough out at the plate and has a keen eye for seeing pitches, which led to him leading San Jacinto in walks last season.

Ryan Myers – Outfielder
Myers comes to HBU from Dallas Baptist University, where he was a key member of the Patriots’ outfield last season. A gifted athlete with a strong arm, Myers covers a lot of ground in center field and is also a threat on the basepaths. At the plate, Myers uses his speed to his advantage, constantly putting pressure on opposing defenses.

Pitcher Nolan Ryan was one of the most dominant pitchers in Major League Baseball history, and he started his career at HBU. Ryan holds the record for most career strikeouts, and he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999.

Third baseman Craig Biggio is another Hall of Famer who got his start at HBU. He played his entire 20-year career with the Houston Astros and he is one of only four players in MLB history with 3,000 hits and 400 stolen bases He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015.

Two-time World Series champion Andy Pettitte also spent his college days at HBU before going on to have a successful Major League career. He is one of only 20 pitchers in MLB history to win 200 or more games while also striking out more than 2,000 batters.

Pitcher: Kyle Hendricks
Hendricks is a right-handed pitcher who has been with the team for four years. He has a career ERA of 3.54 and has struck out more than 300 batters.

Catcher: Buster Posey
Posey is a five-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion. He is considered one of the best catchers in baseball, and he brings a wealth of experience to the HBU baseball team

First baseman: Anthony Rizzo
Rizzo is a three-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner. He has been with the team for six years, and his batting average is .292. He is also known for his outstanding defense.

Second baseman: Dustin Pedroia
Pedroia is a four-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion. He has been with the team for eight years, and his batting average is .302. He is also known for his excellent defense.
