Origins of the New York Giants baseball team
The New York Giants baseball team has a long and storied history, dating back to their origins in the late 19th century. The team was founded in 1883 as the Gothams, and they played their first game against the Philadelphia Phillies They won that game, and went on to win the National League pennant that year.
The team underwent a number of name changes over the years, eventually settling on the New York Giants in 1889. The team continued to be successful throughout the early years of the 20th century, winning World Series titles in 1905, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1933.
The team’s fortunes changed in the 1940s and 1950s, as they suffered a number of losing seasons. The team was sold in 1958 to new owners who relocated the team to San Francisco The new San Francisco Giants were very successful early on, winning World Series titles in 1962 and 2010.
The team’s early years in New York
The New York Giants Baseball Team was founded in 1883. The team played its home games in various stadiums in New York City until 1957, when they moved to San Francisco The team is currently headquartered in San Francisco
The Giants were one of the original eight teams of the National League and they won the National League pennant 14 times between 1885 and 1954. The team also won the World Series five times during that period, in 1886, 1888, 1889, 1905, and 1921.
The team’s success during its early years in New York was due in part to the players who starred for the team during that time, including catcher Buck Ewing, infielder Fred Merkle, outfielder Mike Donlin, and pitchers Christy Mathewson and Rube Marquard.
The team’s move to San Francisco
In 1957, the Giants faced a dilemma. Their home ballpark, the Polo Grounds was in disrepair and unsuitable for hosting baseball games The team’s lease on the Polo Grounds was set to expire after the 1957 season, and the Giants were unable to come to an agreement with the city of New York on a new lease. Faced with the prospect of being homeless, the Giants made the decision to relocate to San Francisco
The move was not without its challenges. The Giants had to find a new home stadium, as well as overcome resistance from Major League Baseball But in the end, the move was successful and the Giants have been playing in San Francisco ever since.
The team’s years in San Francisco
The Giants were a charter member of the National League in 1876. When the team moved to San Francisco in 1958, it was the first Major League franchise on the West Coast The Giants played in New York for 86 years before making the move to California. The team won five World Series Championships while based in New York City
The Giants’ first season in San Francisco was not a successful one. The team finished last in the National League with a record of 60-94. However, the team’s fortunes began to change in the early 1960s. The Giants won their first National League pennant in 1962 behind the play of star outfielder Willie Mays. The team went on to win the World Series that year, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games.
The Giants would go on to win two more World Series titles in the 1970s, led by star players such as outfielder Gary Matthews and pitcher Jim Barr. The team also had success in the 1980s, winning division titles in 1987 and 1989 behind the play of players such as outfielder Kevin Mitchell and pitcher Scott Garrelts.
The Giants have been one of baseball’s most successful teams since moving to San Francisco winning six World Series titles and eight National League pennants. The team has also produced some of baseball’s greatest players including Willie Mays, Barry Bonds and Buster Posey
The team’s return to New York
It took a while for baseball to return to New York following the city’s expulsion of the Giants and Dodgers to the West Coast in 1957. The Mets were not founded until 1962, and although they would go on to win a World Series in 1969, it would be many years before they became a consistent contender. In the meantime, the Yankees dominated the American League winning five World Championships between 1958 and 1964. But there were still many fans who yearned for the return of National League Baseball to New York.
In 1971, Giant’s owner Bob Lurie reached an agreement to sell his team to pharmaceutical mogul Vincent J. McMahon, with the understanding that McMahon would move the team to San Francisco But when the sale was blocked by Major League Baseball McMahon instead sold the team to Tampa businessman Guy Avnet, who then moved them back to San Francisco The Giants returned to their old home at Candlestick Park where they would play until 1999.
