In baseball, every team has its rivals. The Boston Red Sox have the New York Yankees The Los Angeles Dodgers have the San Francisco Giants And the Indiana Southeast baseball team has… well, everyone.
“We’re the new kids on the block,” says head coach Jason Rife. “We’re still trying to earn our place in the conference and in Division III baseball ”
That may be true, but Indiana Southeast is quickly making a name for itself. In just its third season of existence, the team has already made it to the conference semifinals and is one win away from a berth in the Division III World Series
The road to this point hasn’t been easy, though. Indiana Southeast has had to battle its way through some tough opponents, including rival Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
“We definitely don’t take them lightly,” Rife says of Rose-Hulman. “They’re always a tough team to play against.”
The two teams first met on the diamond in 2015, with Indiana Southeast coming out on top 4-3. Since then, they have met seven more times, with each team winning four times. But according to Rife, there is one big difference between these two teams: experience.
“They have a lot of older guys who have been through it before, while we have a lot of younger guys who are just learning what it takes to win at this level,” he says. “I think that’s why we’ve been able to beat them lately. We may not be as talented as they are, but we play with a lot more heart and determination.”
And that heart and determination has paid off. In their most recent meeting, Indiana Southeast came from behind to defeat Rose-Hulman 9-7 and punch their ticket to the conference semifinals for the first time in program history.
It will be interesting to see how these two teams fare against each other in future years as Indiana Southeast continues to grow and improve. For now though, Rife and his team are focused on one thing: winning a conference championship and making it to the Division III World Series
