Abbott was drafted by the California Angels in the 10th round of the 1990 Major League Baseball draft. He made his professional debut that year with the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League and was promoted to the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League midseason. In 1991, he pitched for Peoria and the Palm Springs Suns of the California League. Abbott had a combined 13–6 win–loss record and 2.63 earned run average (ERA) in 1991292 innings pitched between both teams.
After spending 1992 with Palm Springs, he was promoted to the Midland Angels of the Texas League in 1993. In 31 starts for Midland, Abbott went 11–11 with a 4.01 ERA. He began 1994 with Midland, but after two starts, he was promoted to the Edmonton Trappers of the Pacific Coast League (PCL). With Edmonton, Abbott had an 8–5 win-loss record and 2.70 ERA in 21 starts before being called up to Major League Angels that September.
