The first thing you need to know is that there are four different playoff brackets in Louisiana high school basketball: Division I, Division II, Division III and Class 1A-4A. Depending on which bracket your team is in, the number of teams that will be competing will vary.

In Division I, for example, there are typically around 20 teams that make it to the playoffs. In contrast, Class 1A-4A usually has between four and eight teams competing.

The first round of the playoffs is always unpredictable, as under-the-radar teams have a chance to make a statement against more established programs. However, there are a few matchups in particular that everyone will be keeping an eye on.

In the 5A bracket, top-seeded John Curtis Christian will take on 32nd seed Fontainebleau in what is sure to be an explosive game. Curtis is led by superstar junior guard Terrence Shannon, Jr., who is averaging 27 points per game this season. However, Fontainebleau will not be an easy out; they finished the Regular Season with a strong 18-9 record and could upset the higher-seeded team if they get hot at the right time.

Another intriguing matchup in the 5A bracket pits 9th seed come against 24th seed Zachary. Come is led by dynamic guard duo Jahmoni Mitchell and Brandon Johnson, who both average over 20 points per game Zachary doesn’t have quite the same firepower, but they’re a tough team that defends well and could give Come a run for their money.

In the 4A bracket, 3rd seed Neville will take on 30th seed New Iberia in what promises to be a close game Neville is led by senior forward Jaden Shelvin, who is averaging a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds per game New Iberia doesn’t have anyone quite as dominant as Shelvin on their roster, but they’re a well-rounded team that could pull off the upset if things go their way.

Finally, in the 3A bracket, 15th seed Northside will take on 18th seed Carroll in what should be a close contest. Northside is led by guard Jalen Johnson who averages 18 points per game Carroll doesn’t have anyone quite as prolific as Johnson on their roster, but they make up for it with balanced scoring and solid defense. Either team could come out on top in this one.

These are just some of the key matchups to keep an eye on during the first round of the playoffs; with so many talented teams and players involved, anything can happen. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action!
