The Infield: A Closer Look
The infield is traditionally composed of the four positions closest to home plate first baseman, second baseman, shortstop and third baseman. In the modern game, however, John Kruk famously popularized the importance of the “fifth infielder”, otherwise known as the designated hitter The DH is a position created to allow another talented hitter in the lineup without having to sacrifice defense.
The Orioles have had some great infielders over the years, from All-Stars to Gold Glovers. Here are some of the best:
First Baseman: Chris Davis
security for any team, but he’s especially important for the Orioles. Not only does he have one of the best arms in baseball, but he’s also an excellent hitter. He’s led the league in home runs twice and was named an All-Star in 2015.
Second Baseman: Brian Roberts
Roberts was one of the best second basemen in baseball during his time with the Orioles. He was a two-time All-Star and won a Gold Glove in 2005. He was also a key member of the team that won the World Series in 2000.
Shortstop: J.J. Hardy

Third Baseman: Manny Machado
Machado is one of the best players in baseball and he’s still only 24 years old. He’s already won two Gold Gloves and made three All-Star teams. He’s also a dangerous hitter, with a career batting average of .279 and 97 home runs
The Outfield: A Closer Look
In baseball, the outfield is the area of the field beyond the infield. The outfield players are positioned in the field so as to be able to catch balls that are hit into the air. They also try to stop runs from being scored by Hitting the ball back into the infield, or by throwing the ball to a teammate who can then tag out a runner.
Outfielders must be quick and agile, as they need to be able to run after balls that are hit into the gap between them. They also need to have a good arm, as they may need to throw long distances to catch runners out.
The best outfielders are those who can do all of these things well. They are sometimes referred to as “five-tool” players.
The Maryland baseball team has several great outfielders on its roster. These are some of the best of the best.

The Catchers: A Closer Look
The Catchers: A Closer Look
The catcher is perhaps the most important position on a baseball team yet it is also one of the most difficult to play. A catcher must be agile enough to squat for long periods of time, tough enough to take foul balls off of their body and smart enough to know each pitcher’s strengths and weaknesses. They must also be able to hit for power and average. The Maryland baseball team is lucky enough to have two exceptional catchers in senior Adrian Morales and junior Rylan Thomas.
Adrian Morales was born and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland and has been playing baseball since he was five years old. He has always been a Standout Player making the All-Star team every year from Little League through High School Morales had offers from several colleges, but he chose to stay close to home and play for the Terrapins. As a freshman, he started 39 games behind the plate and was named second-team All-Big Ten Morales’ numbers dipped a bit as a sophomore, but he rebounded his junior year, starting all 50 games for Maryland and hitting .293 with six Home Runs and 35 RBIs. He was once again named second-team All-Big Ten Morales is considered one of the best catchers in the country and is expected to be drafted in the top five rounds of the MLB Draft this summer.
Rylan Thomas was born in Baltimore, Maryland but grew up in Tampa, Florida. He began playing baseball at a young age and quickly developed into a top prospect Thomas played his high school ball at Plant City high school where he was named first-team all-state as a senior after hitting .413 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs. Thomas committed to play college baseball at Maryland prior to his senior year of high school and has not disappointed. As a freshman, he started 22 games behind the plate while splitting time with Morales. His sophomore season was cut short due to injury, but he still managed to start 15 games behind the plate while hitting .333 with three home runs before missing the final month of the season with an injured wrist. After taking a redshirt year to recover from his wrist injury Thomas came back strong as a junior, starting 33 games behind the plate while hitting .290 with four home runs and 23 RBIs. He has split time almost evenly with Morales again this season as both catchers have started 27 games apiece while sharing duties behind the plate.
Both Adrian Morales and Rylan Thomas have had successful careers thus far at Maryland and are considered two of the best catchers in program history. With one more year left to play together, they will look to lead the Terps back to Omaha for the College World Series
