That message stuck with James, and it inspired him to start a nonprofit organization called Hoops2Oscar—named after his late friend, Oscar Romero—which provides free SAT prep classes to low-income students in the Raleigh area.

To date, Hoops2Oscar has helped more than 250 students raise their SAT scores an average of 400 points. And James has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.

“I want to make sure that every kid in Raleigh has the opportunity to go to college and reach their full potential,” he says.
