The Evolution of Memphis Basketball
Since the inception of the University of Memphis men’s Basketball Program in 1920, the team has undergone several evolutions. The early years saw little success on the court, but by the 1960s, the team had established itself as a force to be reckoned with. The next few decades would see even more success, culminating in a National Championship in 2008.
In recent years however, the team has struggled to return to its previous level of prominence. The following is a statistical overview of Memphis Basketball tracing its evolution from humble beginnings to present-day challenges.
The golden era of Memphis Basketball
Memphis basketball fans often look back fondly on what is known as the “golden era” of the program. This was a five-year stretch from 2006 to 2011 when the team won at least 30 games and made the NCAA Tournament every year.
During this time, the Tigers were led by Head Coach John Calipari and stars like Chris Douglas-Roberts, Derrick Rose Tyreke Evans and Wesley Witherspoon.
The team’s success during this era can be attributed to a number of factors, including Calipari’s recruiting ability, the talent of the players, and the team’s great chemistry.
This five-year stretch was undoubtedly the most successful period in Memphis Basketball History and it is a time that all Tiger fans remember fondly.
The Decline of Memphis Basketball
Since the hiring of Tubby Smith in 2016, Memphis basketball has been in decline. In the 2016-2017 season, they finished with a 19-13 record, and followed that up with a 22-14 record in the 2017-2018 season This past season, they finished with a dismal 16-17 record. This can all be attributed to the poor coaching of Tubby Smith.
In his three years at Memphis, Tubby Smith has compiled a 43-44 record. This is unacceptable for a program that has historically been one of the best in the country. Under former coach John Calipari Memphis went to the NCAA tournament five times in six years, including a trip to the Final Four in 2008. They also won the conference tournament three times during that span.
What’s even more alarming is the trend of poor recruiting under Tubby Smith. In his three years at Memphis, he has only had one top-40 recruit: James Wiseman who was ranked as the number one player in the country before he committed to Memphis. However, Wiseman only played three games for Memphis before he was declared ineligible by the NCAA and then decided to leave school to prepare for the NBA draft
It’s clear that something needs to change at Memphis if they want to return to their former glory. Tubby Smith needs to be replaced with a coach who can actually recruit and develop talent.
The Resurgence of Memphis Basketball
Few programs have experienced as much success as the University of Memphis men’s Basketball team over the past decade. Under the leadership of head coach Josh Pastner, the Tigers have compiled a record of 190-106, made seven postseason appearances, and won four conference championships
This success has been built on a foundation of exceptional recruiting. Since 2010, Memphis has had fourteen players drafted into the NBA, including first-round picks such as Tyreke Evans, Derrick Rose and Shawne Williams. The team has also produced a number of top-flight players who have gone on to successful careers in Professional Basketball overseas.
What has been most impressive about this run of success is that it has been achieved despite a relative lack of resources. Compared to its peers in the American Athletic Conference Memphis ranks near the bottom in terms of budget, facilities, and attendance. This makes the team’s accomplishments all the more impressive.
The future looks bright for Memphis basketball With a young core of talented players and a proven Head Coach the team is poised to continue its run of success for years to come.
