Get to Know the 2018-19 Minnesota State Hockey Roster

The 2018-19 Minnesota State men’s Hockey Team will feature a mix of old and new faces as the Mavericks look to build on last year’s success. Here’s a quick rundown of the roster:

Forwards

Jack Walker – The Mavericks’ leading scorer from last season returns for his senior campaign. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native had 17 goals and 36 points in 42 games last year and will once again be one of the team’s top offensive threats.

Brady Hirsche – A transfer from the University of Alberta, Hirsche is a 6’3″, 200-pound forward who should add some size and physicality to the Mavericks’ lineup. He had eight goals and 15 points in 28 games with the Golden Bears last season.

Dryden McKay – A native of Downers Grove Illinois, McKay is a freshman who comes to Minnesota State after spending last season with the Tri-City Storm of the USHL. In 45 games with Tri-City, McKay posted a 2.31 GAA and .917 save percentage

The Forwards

With the start of the 18-19 season just around the corner, it’s time to get to know the Minnesota State men’s Hockey Team This year’s squad features 13 forwards, all of whom are eager to make an impact on the ice. Here’s a closer look at each of them.

– Senior captain C.J. Franklin is a versatile forward who can play both center and wing. He’s coming off a 2017-18 Season in which he tallied 11 goals and 15 assists in 36 games.

– Junior Parker Tuomie is the team’s leading returning scorer after posting 13 goals and 16 assists in 42 games last season. He’s a gifted playmaker who should see plenty of time on the Power play this year.

– Sophomore Connor Mackey is one of the team’s Top Defensive forwards. He finished last season with two goals and seven assists in 38 games while playing a key role on the penalty kill.

– Freshman Nate Reid is an offensive threat who tallied 24 goals and 35 assists in 54 games with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL last season. He’ll look to make an immediate impact on the score sheet this year.

The Defensemen

The 2018-19 Minnesota State Hockey Roster is made up of 12 forwards, 8 defensemen, and 2 goaltenders.

Defensemen play an important role in hockey, as they are responsible for stopping the opposing team from scoring. They typically stay near their own goal and try to keep the puck out of the net.

-Bryce Brodzinski: A junior from Blaine, Minnesota, Brodzinski is in his third season with the team. He has appeared in 42 games so far in his career and has 14 points.

-Clayton Cosgrove: A senior from Stillwater, Minnesota, Cosgrove is in his fourth and final season with the team. He has played in 123 games during his career and has 24 points.

The Schedule

The first game of the season is at home against Bemidji State on Saturday, October 6 at 7:07 p.m. The regular season consists of 34 games, 16 of which are on the road and 18 are at home. Of the 18 home games nine are Friday Night games, six are Saturday night games and three are on Sunday afternoon.

The 2018-19 Minnesota State hockey team is composed of 28 talented athletes, hailing from all across the United States and Canada. The team is made up of forwards, defensemen, and goalies, all of whom have contributed to the success of the team this season. Forwards
seniors next season. He is originally from St. Louis, Missouri and played for the Waterloo Black Hawks in the USHL prior to coming to Minnesota State. A powerful player with a high hockey IQ, he has been one of the best players on the team this season.

Defensemen
sophomore from Edina, Minnesota. He is a mobile defenseman who is adept at both defending and moving the puck up ice. He had a great rookie season and will be looked to for leadership on the blueline next year.

Goalies
originally from North Andover Massachusetts. In his three years at Minnesota State, he has compiled a record of 49-16-5, with a .922 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average. He is one of the best goalies in college hockey and will be key to any success that Minnesota State has in the playoffs.

Forwards:

-Dryden McKay: McKay is a goalie who was brought in to provide some depth behind starter Connor LaCouvee. He’s aMinnesota native and played his Junior hockey with the Des Moines Buccaneers so he’s sure to be a popular player with fans.

Defensemen:
-Bryce Jenkinson: A physical presence on the blue line Jenkinson is known for his hard-hitting style of play. He’s also not afraid to drop the gloves, as evidenced by his team-leading six fighting majors last season.
-Daniel Brickley: Brickley is one of the most promising young defensemen in college hockey His size (6’3″, 200 lbs) and skill set make him a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the ice.
-Ian Scheid: A 7th Round Draft pick of the Minnesota Wild in 2016, Scheid is a mobile defenseman who has good vision and makes smart decisions with the puck.

The Alumni

In order to get to know the 2018-19 Minnesota State Hockey roster, it is important to first understand the team’sAlumni. These are the players who have been a part of the Minnesota State Hockey Program in the past, and who have gone on to have successful careers in the NHL. Here are some of the most notable alumni:

-Zach Parise: Parise is a forward who currently plays for the Minnesota Wild He was drafted in the first round of the 2003 NHL Draft by the New Jersey Devils and he has also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders Parise has represented the United States in international competition on multiple occasions, winning a silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics

-Ryan Suter: Suter is a defenseman who currently plays for the Minnesota Wild. He was drafted in the first round of the 2003 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators and he has also played for the Detroit Red Wings Suter is a two-time Olympian, winning a silver medal with Team USA at the 2010 Winter Olympics

-Derek Stepan: Stepan is a forward who currently plays for the Arizona Coyotes. He was drafted in the second round ofthe 2008 NHL Draft bythe New York Rangers and he has also played forthe Chicago Blackhawks and Tampa Bay Lightning Stepan has representedthe United Statesin international competition on multiple occasions, winning a bronze medal atthe 2018 World Championships
