In recent years the Morehouse Basketball Program has enjoyed a great deal of success. The team has won back-to-back conference championships and has made two consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament. The program has also produced a number of All-American players including current Portland Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum.

With all of this success, it is easy to forget that just a few years ago, the program was in danger of being shut down entirely. In 2011, Morehouse was facing severe financial difficulties and was forced to make drastic cuts to its budget. Athletics was one of the areas that was hit hardest by the budget cuts, and Morehouse’s Basketball Program was one of the first victims.

Facing an uncertain future, the Morehouse basketball team came together and decided to fight for their program. They organized fundraisers and went on a media blitz, raising awareness about their situation and ultimately helping to raise enough money to save their program.

Today, the Morehouse basketball program is thriving and its future is bright. The team continues to compete at a high level and produce great players and they have become an important part of the Morehouse community.

The History of Morehouse Basketball

Morehouse Basketball dates back to 1896, when Professor E. W. Titterson took charge of the physical education program and organized the first team. The squad was made up of students from other colleges who had come to Morehouse to study under Titterson. The team played its first game against Atlanta Baptist College (now Clark Atlanta University) and won, 21–11.

Over the years, Morehouse has produced some outstanding teams and players. In 1925, Coach Woodrow Jones led the Maroon Tigers to an undefeated season (18-0) and their first appearance in the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament In 1960, Coach Ben Jobe’s team made it to the NAIB tournament for a second time. Morehouse also had successful seasons in the 1970s under Coach tom Davis and in the early 2000s under Head Coach Grady Brewer.

Morehouse has had 14 NCAA Division I All-Americans and 17 players who have gone on to play in the NBA. Among the most notable are Hank Aaron who played for Major League Baseball’s Milwaukee Braves Baseball Hall of Famer Eddie Murray Basketball Hall of Famer Willis Reed; Spud Webb who won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 1986; and Sam Perkins, who played in three Olympic Games (1984, 1988, 1992) and won a gold medal in 1984.

The current head coach is Rick Parsons, who took over the program in 2018 after four seasons as an Assistant Coach under Mike Hopkins at Syracuse University Parsons is a native of Chicago and a graduate of Northwestern University

The Morehouse basketball coaching Staff

The Morehouse Basketball Coaching Staff is led by Head Coach Mike Tisdale. Coach Tisdale took over the program in 2016 and has quickly made an impact, leading the team to an appearance in the Division II NCAA tournament in just his second season.

Assistant coaches Nate McMillan and Charles Ekezie round out the staff. Coach McMillan is a former NBA player and coached at Morehouse for two seasons before moving on to the professional ranks. Coach Ekezie is a Morehouse alumnus and played professionally overseas before returning to his alma mater to join the Coaching Staff

The staff has done an excellent job of recruiting and developing talent, as evidenced by the team’s success on the court. With another strong recruiting class coming in next season, the future looks bright for House Basketball

The Morehouse Basketball team is a NCAA Division II team that competes in the Southern collegiate athletic conference The team is currently coached by Michael Grant, who is in his fourth season with the program. The Morehouse basketball team has a rich history, dating back to its first season in 1902. The program has produced several professional players, including NBA All-Star Tyler Hansbrough.

The Morehouse Basketball Schedule is released a few weeks before the start of the season. The schedule includes opponents, Game Times and TV information. The season typically runs from November to February.

Morehouse Basketball: A Look at the Program

Since its inception in 1898, the Morehouse Basketball Program has been one of the most successful in Division II play. The program has produced two NCAA Division II championship teams and has made nine appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament. One of the biggest challenges facing the program is the lack of a permanent home court The team currently plays its home games at an off-campus facility, but hopes to move into a new on-campus arena in the near future. This would give the team a big boost in both recruiting and overall morale.

Another issue facing the program is its relatively small budget. This has made it difficult to schedule non-conference games against big-name opponents, which limits exposure for the team and makes it tough to attract top recruits

Despite these challenges, there is a lot of positive momentum surrounding Morehouse basketball right now. The team has a talented core of players, a dedicated Coaching Staff and a passionate fan base. With a little bit of luck, the program will continue to improve in the years to come and become a force to be reckoned with in Division II basketball.

Although the team has had success in recent years how does it compare to other programs?

In terms of winning percentage, Morehouse ranks in the top 10% of all College Basketball programs. The team has an impressive 71% winning percentage overall, and has had five seasons with a winning percentage of 80% or more. In comparison, programs like Duke and Kentucky have a winning percentage of approximately 60%.

In terms of conference championships, Morehouse ranks behind only Duke and Kentucky. The team has won Ten Conference championships in its history, most recently in 2016. In contrast, Duke has won 25 conference championships and Kentucky has won 21.

Finally, in terms of NCAA tournament appearances, Morehouse ranks ahead of programs like Notre Dame and UCLA. The team has been to the NCAA tournament five times in its history, most recently in 2019. Notre Dame and UCLA have each only been to the tournament three times.
