The underdogs
It’s the time of year when college baseball teams battle it out in the NCAA tournament for a chance to make it to the College World Series The tournament starts with 64 teams, which are whittled down to 16 by way of the Regional and Super Regional rounds.
This year, there are a few Cinderella stories among the underdogs remaining in the tournament. Here’s a look at some of these teams that have defied the odds and made it this far.
The underdogs
One of the biggest underdog stories in this year’s tournament has been No. 4 seed Stanford, who made it to the Super Regional round after upsetting top-ranked University of Miami in the Regionals. They will face off against No. 13 Vanderbilt in a best-of-three series starting on Friday.
Another upset came courtesy of Auburn, who defeated Florida State in their Regional final. They will take on UNC-Wilmington in their Super Regional series. The Seahawks also enter the matchup as underdogs, as they had to win two elimination games just to make it to this round.
Few expected Oregon State to get this far, as they were not even one of the top eight seeds in their region. But after some big wins, they find themselves facing Oklahoma State in their Super Regional matchup.
It’s safe to say that all four of these teams have already exceeded expectations by making it to this round of the tournament. But with only four spots up for grabs in the College World Series their journey is far from over. Tune in this weekend to see if any of these underdogs can keep their improbable run alive
The dark horses
The NCAA Baseball Tournament is down to its final 16 teams, and there are some dark horses still in the mix.
Baylor, TCU and Oregon are all seeded lower than their opponents, but they have proved they can hang with the best of them.
Baylor will take on TCU in the Fort Worth Super Regional and Oregon will face off against Mississippi State in the Corvallis Super Regional.
Both Baylor and Oregon entered the tournament as at-large teams, while TCU earned its spot by winning the Big 12 conference tournament
Baylor is led by senior infielder Josh Sovereign, who is batting .369 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs. The Bears also have a strong pitching staff, led by senior right-hander Mark WittTwin Falls (8-3, 2.48 ERA).
TCU is looking to make its third straight trip to the College World Series and the Horned Frogs have the talent to do it. Senior outfielder Cody Jones is batting .333 with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs, and junior right-hander Tyler Alexander has been stellar on the mound, going 9-2 with a 2.39 ERA.
Oregon is making just its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament but the Ducks have already made some noise. They upset top-seeded Texas Tech in the Lubbock Regional and they’ll be looking to keep things rolling against Mississippi State
The Cinderella stories
As the NCAA Baseball Superregionals get underway, there are a few Cinderella stories worth watching. Here’s a look at some of the teams that are in and some of the teams that are out.
In:
-Vanderbilt
The Commodores are one of the hottest teams in the country right now. They swept through the Regional round, including a come-from-behind win against Duke in the deciding game. Vanderbilt will be a tough out in the Super Regionals
-Oregon State
The Beavers had to battle their way through the Regional round, but they did it with some gutsy pitching performances. They’ll need to bring that same intensity to the Super Regionals if they want to keep their season alive.
Out:
-LSU
The Tigers were one of the favorites to make it to the College World Series but they came up short in the Super Regionals. They’ll have to regroup and try again next year.
-Texas Tech
The Red Raiders were also one of the favorites to make it to Omaha, but they came up short against Florida State in the Super Regionals. Texas Tech will be back next year, though, and they’ll be looking to make a run at the title.
The long shots

The dark horses
In baseball, a “dark horse” team is one that unexpectedly makes it far in the playoffs. With the NCAA baseball Superregionals beginning this weekend, let’s take a look at some of the dark horses who could make a run at the College World Series

Mississippi State will be playing against Stanford in the Superregionals.
Finally, Florida State is a team that could make some noise in the playoffs. The Seminoles finished 40-21 on the season and have a talented group of hitters, including sophomore outfielder Robby Martin, who was recently named ACC Player of the Year. Florida State will be playing against Auburn in the Superregionals.
