The History of NCAA Basketball
NCAA Basketball is a College Basketball simulation video game series published by EA Sports. The series began in 2006 with the release of NCAA March Madness 06. The most recent installment in the series is NCAA March Madness 17, which was released on February 21, 2017.
The series was created after the discontinuation of the EA Sports’ college basketball game series NCAA Basketball The first installment in the new series was overshadowed by controversy surrounding the use of former University of Michigan basketball player Chris Webber’s likeness.
The history of NCAA Basketball Video Games can be traced back to 1983, with the release of Dr. J and Larry Bird Go One on One, which was developed by Electronic Arts and released on the Commodore 64 and Apple II platforms. In 1988, EA released one of the earliest college basketball games College Hoops, which featured 8-bit graphics and allowed players to compete as Generic University or one of 28 Division I schools.
In 1993, EA released Andrew Long’s 3D college basketball for MS-DOS PC’s, which featured fullcourt gameplay and allowed players to create their own teams and conferences. In 1996, EA March Madness 96, which was the first game in the series to be licensed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
The game featured 32 Division I schools and allowed players to compete in a tournament or an entire season. The following year, EA released March Madness 97, which added eight more schools to the lineup and introduced create-a-player mode
In 1998, EA released NCAA Final Four 97 featuring Mike Gminski on the cover. This was followed by NCAA March Madness 98 in 1999, which featured Duke University’s Elton Brand on the cover; both games were also released on Nintendo 64 (N64) platform in addition to personal computers (PCs).
