- The future of baseball in the Netherlands
It may come as a surprise to some, but baseball is actually a national pastime in the Netherlands. In fact, the Netherlands has a rich baseball history dating back to the 1800s.
The history of baseball in the Netherlands
Although baseball is not as popular in the Netherlands as it is in other countries, it has a long and rich history. The game was first introduced to the Dutch by American soldiers stationed in the country during World War II. Since then, baseball has become a national pastime, with teams competing at both the amateur and professional level.
The Netherlands has a strong baseball tradition, with many of its players going on to compete at the highest level Major League Baseball (MLB) players from the Netherlands include Druw Jones Eugene Kingsale, Sidney Ponson, Curt Schilling Jurickson Profar, Xander Bogaerts, and Wladimir Balentien.
The popularity of baseball in the Netherlands
Baseball is a relatively new sport in the Netherlands, but it has quickly gained popularity among both young and old. According to a recent survey, over 40% of the population aged 6 and up say they have played baseball at least once.
The Netherlands has a strong baseball tradition, dating back to the early 1900s when the first Dutch team was founded. Baseball was introduced to the Netherlands by American sailors who were stationed there during World War II. Since then, the sport has continued to grow in popularity.
There are now over 200 baseball clubs in the Netherlands, with teams competing at both the amateur and professional level. The Dutch national team is a regular contender at international tournaments, and in 2013 they even hosted the World Baseball Classic
So why is baseball so popular in the Netherlands? There are a few reasons. First of all, baseball is a relatively simple sport that can be played by people of all ages and abilities. It’s also a very social game, and many Dutch people enjoy playing it with friends or family.
Another reason for baseball’s popularity is that there are many different ways to play the game For example, you can play traditional nine-inning games, or you can play shorter versions like five-inning games or even three-inning games. This means that people can enjoy a Game of Baseball even if they don’t have a lot of time on their hands.
Finally, many Dutch people appreciate the fact that baseball is not as physically demanding as other sports such as soccer or rugby. This means that people of all ages and fitness levels can enjoy playing the game without having to worry about getting injured.
The Netherlands National Baseball team
The Netherlands national baseball team is the national Baseball Team of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The team is controlled by the Royal Netherlands Baseball And Softball Federation (KNBSB), which is a member of the Confederation of European Baseball (CEB) and an affiliate member of the international baseball Federation (IBAF).

Today, the NLB is comprised of 10 teams from across the Netherlands. The league is divided into two divisions, with each team playing a total of 36 games.
Baseball is a popular sport in the Netherlands, with many locals cheering on their favorite team The Dutch National Team has also enjoyed success on the international stage, winning gold at the 2011 IBAF World Cup and bronze at the 2013 World Baseball Classic
The Little League World Series champions from the Netherlands
Since the early 1990s, when Dutch Little League Baseball teams started having success in various international tournaments, the small European nation has become a force to be reckoned with on the diamond. In 1998, a team from the Netherlands made it all the way to the Little League World Series Championship game and in 2011 another Dutch squad won the European Little League title.
In 2012, a team from Curaçao – an island off the coast of Venezuela that is a constituent country of the Netherlands – won the Little League World Series defeating a team from Japan in the Championship game It was the first time a team from outside of North America had won the tournament.
The Baseball Hall of Fame members from the Netherlands
According to the official website of the Baseball Hall of Fame there are four members from the Netherlands: Bert Blyleven Johnny Vander Meer, Eppa Rixey, and Babe Ruth
Bert Blyleven is a former Dutch professional baseball player who pitched in the Major League Baseball (MLB) for 22 seasons, from 1970 to 1992. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011.
Johnny Vander Meer was a Dutch professional baseball player who pitched in the MLB for eight seasons, from 1937 to 1951. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.
Eppa Rixey was a American professional baseball player who pitched in the MLB for 19 seasons, from 1912 to 1933. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1963.
Babe Ruth was an American professional Baseball player who played in the MLB for 22 seasons, from 1914 to 1935. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
The Major League baseball players from the Netherlands
The Netherlands has a long history of producing high-quality major league baseball (MLB) players. In fact, the country has been represented in the MLB for over a century, with the first Dutch player making his debut in 1903.
Since then, dozens of Dutch players have gone on to have successful careers in the MLB, including big names like Bert Blyleven, Andruw Jones, and Xander Bogaerts. The Netherlands is also the birthplace of Baseball Legend Babe Ruth
Interestingly, despite its small size, the Netherlands is one of the most successful countries in terms of producing MLB players relative to its population. In fact, per capita, the Netherlands has produced more MLB players than any other country except for the United States and Cuba.
So what is it about the Netherlands that makes it such a breeding ground for top-tier baseball players?
Well, part of it may have to do with the fact that baseball is one of the most popular sports in the country. In addition to being widely played at both the amateur and professional level, baseball games are regularly televised on national television and attract large crowds of spectators.
But there are also some more practical reasons why Dutch baseball players tend to be so successful at making it to the MLB. For instance, many young Dutch players benefit from excellent coaching and facilities from a young age. Moreover, unlike some other countries where baseball is popular (such as Japan), there are no restrictions on how many foreign players can be on an MLB team roster. This makes it easier for Dutch players to be recruited by Major League clubs.
With all this taken into account, it’s clear that baseball is an important part of Dutch culture and history – and something that shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.
The World Baseball Classic champions from the Netherlands
It would be an understatement to say that the Netherlands were not one of the favorites going into the 2017 World Baseball Classic In fact, most casual fans probably couldn’t even tell you where the Netherlands is, let alone that they even had a baseball team But somehow, against all odds, the Dutch National Team rose to the occasion and ended up winning the whole tournament.
This was no small feat, as they had to go through some of the best teams in the world, including powerhouse squads from the United States Japan, and Cuba. But they persevered, and in the end, they were crowned champions.
It was a truly remarkable achievement for a country that doesn’t even have Professional Baseball leagues. For the Netherlands, baseball is more of a passion than a profession. But that passion was on full display during the World Baseball Classic and it’s something that everyone can admire.
The future of baseball in the Netherlands
Baseball has been a national pastime in the Netherlands for many years, but the future of the sport is unclear. There is currently no Professional Baseball League in the country, and while there are several semi-professional and amateur leagues, they are not well-funded or organized. The Dutch national team has performed poorly in international competitions in recent years and there is little interest from young people in playing the sport.
However, there are still many passionate baseball fans in the Netherlands, and some hope that the sport will make a comeback in the country. There are several baseball academies in the country that are training young players and some of these players are beginning to make an impact on the international stage. With enough support, it is possible that baseball could once again become a popular sport in the Netherlands.
