The Infield
The infield is the area of the baseball diamond closest to home plate It is made up of four positions: first base, second base, third base, and shortstop. Each position is occupied by a player who fields batted balls that come his way.
First base is the position furthest to the right when looking out from home plate The first baseman’s job is to catch throws from the other infielders for outs and to receive throws from the catcher on plays at first base. He also needs to be quick on his feet to field bunts down the first Base Line
Second base is located to the left of first base. The second baseman’s job is similar to the first baseman’s in that he needs to catch throws and field bunts. He also needs to be able to turn double plays, which means he must be able to field a ball hit to him and quickly throw it to the shortstop (or third baseman), who will then throw it over to first base before the runner gets there.
Third base is located to the left of second base. The third baseman’s main responsibility is to defend against hard-hit balls that are hit toward him. He also needs to catch throws from the outfielders and make accurate throws down to second or first base on plays at those bases.
Shortstop is located between third and second base. The shortstop’s main responsibility is defense, as he needs communicate with both third basemen and second basemen on where they should throw the ball when they receive it. He also need sot be able ot field balls hit in between him and either second or third base as well as bunts down either Foul Line
