The Old Dominion University men’s Basketball team began play in 1930. They were founded as an independent school and remained that way for sixty years. The team played their home games in theScope arena in Norfolk, Virginia. The first ever game played by the Old Dominion men’s basketball team was on January 3rd, 1931. They defeated Virginia Wesleyan 47 to 28. The program did not have any formal coaching in its early years and relied mostly on student-athletes to lead the team. In 1934, the team went undefeated with a record of 13 wins and 0 losses. The following year they joined the Dixie Conference and won their first conference championship

The sixties marked a period of great change for the Basketball Program In 1963, they joined the Mason-Dixon Conference and won their second Conference Championship The following year, they moved to the Sun Belt Conference and won their third conference championship. In 1966, they made the move to Division I play and joined the Southern Conference They won their fourth conference championship in 1968.

In 1970, the team made another significant move when they left the Southern Conference to join the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). They would go on to win nine CAA championships over the next thirty years.

In 1999, Old Dominion University made the jump to Division I football and joined Conference USA As a result of this move, they were forced to leave the CAA behind for basketball. They joined Colonial Athletic Association rival George Mason University in the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAC). After only one season in MAC, they left to join yet another conference – this time it was the Atlantic 10 Conference
