Robert Morris Colonials Ice hockey began play in 2004. The team plays its home games at 84 Lumber Arena, located on the campus of Robert Morris University. The arena has a capacity of 2,000 people.

The Colonials are coached by Derek Schooley. He is in his 13th season as Head Coach of the Colonials. In his time at Robert Morris he has led the team to 3 NCAA tournament appearances and 5 conference championships His overall record at Robert Morris is 267-181-46 (.583).

The Colonials have appeared in the NCAA Tournament 3 times in their history. Their best finish came in 2014, when they made it to the Frozen Four, where they lost to Union College in the semi-finals.

Robert Morris has had 14 players drafted into the NHL since 2004.

The History of Robert Morris University Hockey

Robert Morris University hockey is a NCAA Division I program that has been a part of the school since 2004. The team is a member of the Atlantic Hockey Conference and plays its home games at the PPG Paints Arena which is also home to the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins The Colonials have had moderate success since joining Division I, making the NCAA tournament in 2013 and 2015. 2004: The team is founded as an independent program and begins play in Division I.

2013: The team makes its first NCAA tournament appearance, losing to Denver in the first round.

The Robert Morris University Hockey Program

Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is home to a NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey program that plays in Atlantic Hockey The team is currently coached by Derek Schooley and captained by senior forward Tommy Torti. The Colonials have appeared in three NCAA Division I Men’s ice hockey Tournaments, most recently in 2019. They are also four-time Atlantic Hockey regular season champions and two-time tournament champions, having won the title in 2012 and 2015. The team plays its home games at 84 Lumber Arena at RMU Island Sports Center, which opened in 2006 and has a capacity of 3,000.

The Colonials began play in 2004 and joined Atlantic Hockey for the 2006-07 season. In their first season in the conference, they finished first in the regular season standings with a 20-4-4 record and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. They defeated Alaska Anchorage in the first round before losing to eventual National Champion Michigan State in the regional semifinals. In 2012, the Colonials again finished first in the Regular Season standings and went on to win their first Atlantic Hockey Tournament championship, defeating Mercyhurst 5-1 in the final. This earned them a spot in the NCAA Tournament where they defeated New Hampshire 2-1 before losing to eventual national champion Boston College 5-1.

In 2015, Robert Morris won their second Atlantic Hockey Tournament championship with a 3-2 overtime victory over Air Force in the final. This earned them a spot in the NCAA tournament for the third time, where they again lost to Boston College 5-2. The Colonials have appeared in seven conference tournament championships since joining Atlantic Hockey, more than any other team in the conference.

The Robert Morris University Hockey Program has been one of the most successful programs in its short history and looks poised to continue its success into the future.

The Robert Morris University Hockey Team

The Robert Morris University Hockey Team is a NCAA Division I Ice Hockey team that competes in the Atlantic Hockey conference. The Colonials are currently coached by Derek Schooley and Assistant Coach Todd Reirden. Goaltending Coach Mike Bales is also on the staff. The team plays its home games at the 84 Lumber Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Robert Morris University began its ice hockey program in 2004 and joined Atlantic Hockey in 2006. The Colonials made their first appearance in the NCAA Division I Men’s ice hockey Tournament in 2014. They defeated defending champions, the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, in the Opening Round before falling to St. Cloud State University in the Midwest Regional Final.

The Colonials have produced several NHL Draft picks, including Getzlav Galiev (2010, Washington Capitals), Brady Austin (2013, Buffalo Sabres)Colin Sullivan (2014, Montreal Canadiens) Ryan Dmowski (2016, New York Islanders). In addition, several Robert Morris alumni have gone on to play professional hockey including David Gray (ECHL), Joel Edmundson (NHL) and Andrew Shaw (NHL).

The Robert Morris University Hockey Schedule

The Robert Morris University Hockey team is set to have an exciting season. With new additions to the roster and a challenging schedule, the team is looking forward to proving themselves against some of the best teams in the country.

The team will be playing thirty-six games this season, eighteen of which are at home in the Island Sports Center. Some of the notable games on the schedule include a home-and-home series with conference rivals Niagara University as well as games against NCAA Tournament teams such as Northeastern University, Michigan Tech University, and Quinnipiac University.

The Robert Morris University Hockey Roster

The Robert Morris University hockey team is made up of student athletes who are committed to academic excellence and competing at the highest level of NCAA Division I hockey. The team is coached by Derek Schooley, who has led the Colonials to three NCAA Tournament appearances in his eleven seasons at the helm. The Colonials have had six 20-win seasons under Coach Schooley, including a program-best 25-win season in 2014-15.

The Colonials have had nine players drafted into the NHL, including current NHL players Adam Clendening and Colin McDonald. Robert Morris University has also produced a number of successful professional Hockey Players such as Andrew Hutchinson and Chris Conner.

The Robert Morris University Hockey Coaches

With a new season just around the corner, let’s take a look at the Robert Morris University hockey coaching staff. The team is led by head coach Derek Schooley, who is entering his 12th season as Head Coach of the Colonials.

Assisting Schooley is associate Head coach Andrew Albertson, who is in his second season with the team. Albertson is a former professional hockey player who played in the NHL for eight seasons.

Rounding out the Coaching Staff is assistant coach Jeremy Goodrow, who is also in his second season with the team. Goodrow played four seasons of Professional Hockey before joining the coaching ranks.

The Robert Morris University Hockey Facilities

The Robert Morris University Hockey Team plays at the RMU Island Sports Center, located on Neville Island just outside of Pittsburgh. The facility houses two regulation size ice rinks, a state-of-the-art locker room and training room, and a weight room. The RMU Island Sports Center is also home to the University’s Men’s and Women’s Club Hockey teams, as well as many youth and adult hockey leagues.

The RMU Hockey fans are some of the most knowledgeable and passionate college hockey fans in the country. They know a lot about the game of hockey and are very opinionated about their team. They are also very friendly and welcoming to opposing fans who come to their arena to watch a game. This makes for a great environment at RMU hockey games whether the team is winning or losing.

The Robert Morris University Hockey Alumni

In 2014, the Robert Morris University men’s Hockey Team made history. They became the first Division I program in Pennsylvania to advance to the NCAA tournament The team has since had a few more impressive seasons, including a 2015 season where they won 23 games.

forward Derek Schooley is the current head coach of the RMU men’s Hockey team Prior to his time at RMU, he was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Ohio University Schooley played for the Colonials from 1995-1999.
After his time at RMU, Schooley went on to play professional hockey for several years. He played for teams like the Johnstown Chiefs and Dayton Bombers of the ECHL, and he also spent some time in Europe playing in Germany and Great Britain
