Introduction
DSU Baseball is one of the most tradition-rich programs in the country. The team has won a total of 24 conference championships made 28 NCAA tournament appearances and has been to the College World Series 11 times.
The Aztecs have produced a number of Major League Baseball players, including Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn SDSU has also had a number of successful head coaches including Jim Dietz and Mark Martinez.
The team is currently coached by Sammie Beecham, who has led the Aztecs to three straight conference championships. The Aztecs are once again one of the top teams in the country and are looking to make another deep run in the NCAA Tournament
The Early Years
San Diego State University has a long and proud tradition of excellence in baseball. The Aztecs have been playing baseball since the early 1900s, and they have won numerous conference championships and made several appearances in the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament
In the early years of the program, the Aztecs were mostly a regional team, playing other California schools. But in the 1950s, under Head Coach Jim Dietz, the Aztecs began to attract national attention Dietz led the team to four straight conference championships from 1958 to 1961, and in 1960, the Aztecs made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament They would make three more tournament appearances under Dietz before he retired in 1972.
The Aztecs have continued to be one of the top baseball programs in the country under subsequent head coaches. In 1986, head coach Dick Williams led the team to its first-ever appearance in the College World Series The Aztecs have made six more appearances in the CWS since then, most recently in 2016. In total, SDSU has won 17 conference championships and made 26 NCAA tournament appearances.
The Jack Murphy Era
San Diego State University baseball has been a storied program dating back to its days as a power in the California Collegiate Athletic Association In the 1970s, the Aztecs became a national powerhouse under the direction of Head Coach Jim Dietz. San Diego State made seven trips to the College World Series under Dietz, including five straight from 1974-78. The Aztecs also won the NCAA Division I championship in 1971 and 1977.
In 1979, Jack Murphy took over as Head coach of the Aztecs and led the team to an even more successful era. Murphy guided SDSU to 12 straight NCAA tournament appearances, including eight trips to the College World Series The Aztecs won the National Championship in 1986 under Murphy’s leadership.
Murphy retired from coaching after the 1991 season, but remains one of the most respected figures in San Diego State baseball history. His 1,332 victories are still a school record and he is one of only four head coaches in NCAA Division I history to win more than 1,300 games at one school.
The Tony Gwynn Era
The Tony Gwynn era of San Diego State Baseball was one of the most successful periods in the program’s history. Under Gwynn’s leadership, the Aztecs won five Mountain West Conference championships and made nine NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the College World Series in 1998. Gwynn, who was inducted into the college baseball Hall of Fame in 2007, is widely regarded as one of the greatest hitters in baseball history
The Steve Fisher Era
The Steve Fisher era of SDSU baseball began in 2003, and since then the team has made nine NCAA Tournament appearances, won six Mountain West regular season championships, and captured four Mountain West tournament titles. Under Fisher’s guidance, the Aztecs have also produced 37 Major League Baseball draft picks including four first-rounders.
The Mark Martinez Era
Martinez inherited a team that had gone 20-32 the previous year and led them to a 38-22 record and their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament The team went on to win the Mountain West conference tournament securing a spot in the NCAA regionals. The Aztecs would eventually fall to Texas A&M in the regional final, but Martinez had established a winning culture and a tradition of excellence that would continue for years to come.
The current team
The current team is made up of young men who have a passion for the Game of Baseball and a desire to win. They are led by a group of experienced and successful coaches who have a proven track record of success at the collegiate level. The team plays its home games at Tony Gwynn Stadium, located on the campus of San Diego State University They are members of the Mountain West Conference and have won the conference championship nine times in the last ten years.
The future of the program
