Shepherd Men’s Basketball Looks to Continue Success in 2020-2021

Shepherd Men’s Basketball: Overview

Shepherd University’s men’s Basketball team is coming off a successful 2019-2020 season in which they went 22-9 overall and 15-5 in conference play The Rams advanced to the semi-finals of the Mountain East conference tournament before falling to eventual champion Wheeling Jesuit. Head Coach Justin Namolik enters his third season at the helm of the program, and he will look to continue the success that the team has experienced over the past two years.

The Rams will have to replace three Key Players from last year’s team, including leading scorer Eric vom Ehr (17.0 ppg), who graduated. Other significant departures include forward Nate Johnson (9.4 ppg) and guard/forward Daulton Hockman (7.4 ppg). Despite these losses, Shepherd does return a solid core of players that should keep them in contention for another conference title

The Rams will be led by senior guard/forward Winston Bell Jr., who is coming off a junior season in which he averaged 16.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game Bell was named First Team All-Mountain East Conference and will be looking to build on his impressive campaign as he enters his final year of eligibility. Other key returning players include junior guard Jordan Lyon (12.8 ppg, 4.7 apg) and senior forward Zac Simms (10.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg).

With a strong returning nucleus and some promising newcomers, Shepherd University men’s basketball looks poised for another successful season in 2020-2021!

Shepherd Men’s Basketball: The Team

The Shepherd Men’s basketball team is looking to continue its success from last season into the 2020-2021 campaign. The Rams went 26-5 overall and 15-3 in conference play last season, winning the West Virginia collegiate athletic conference regular season and tournament titles. The team returns four starters from last year’s squad, including senior forward Kelvin McNeil, who was named the WVIAC Player of the Year.

With a strong core of returning players, Shepherd is poised to once again be one of the top teams in the conference. head coach Justin Namolik is entering his third season at the helm of the program, and he has led the Rams to back-to-back WVIAC Tournament titles. The Rams will open up the 2020-2021 Season on November 25th against Bluefield State

Shepherd Men’s Basketball: The Roster

The Rams will look to fill the void left by the graduation of eight seniors, including All-MEC first team selection Nate Lackey.

The Rams do return two starters in redshirt junior guard Darius Woods and senior forward Winston Burgess. Woods is Shepherd’s leading returning scorer after averaging 11.5 points per game last season while Burgess averaged 6.8 points per contest and was second on the team in rebounding with 5.6 boards per game.

Joining Woods and Burgess in the starting lineup will be junior guard Kobe Barrett and junior forward Zach Johnson. Barrett played in all 32 games for the Rams last season, averaging 4.0 points per game while Johnson appeared in 25 contests, averaging 2.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest.

The team is coached by Josh Loeppky, who is entering his sixth season as the Head Coach of the Rams. Coach Loeppky has compiled a record of 126-74 during his time at Shepherd, and he has led the team to four conference championships and three NCAA tournament appearances.

Joining Coach Loeppky on the sidelines is Assistant Coach Ben Cisek, who is entering his first season with the Rams. Coach Cisek comes to Shepherd after spending four seasons as an assistant coach at Division II St. Cloud State University Prior to his time at St. Cloud State Coach Cisek was an assistant coach at Division III UW-Eau Claire for one season.

Talley will be joined in the backcourt by junior guard Khalil Robinson, who is one of the best shooters in the conference. In the frontcourt, junior forward Isaiah Saunders returns after a breakout year last season. He will be joined by sophomore forward Marcus Dixon, who was a member of the conference All-Rookie Team last year.
