How the Siue Basketball Team Made it to the Final Four

The Siue men’s basketball team has made it to the Final Four for the first time in school history! Here’s how they did it:

The team had a great regular season finishing with a record of 29-2. They then won the Ohio Valley conference tournament which gave them a spot in the NCAA tournament

In the NCAA Tournament they won their first two games against New Hampshire and Indiana. This put them in the Sweet Sixteen where they faced off against top-seeded Kansas. The team played amazing defense and upset Kansas, winning 71-56.

This sent them to the Elite Eight, where they faced Kentucky. once again, the team played great defense and won 67-58. This win put them in the Final Four for the first time in school history!

The Siue Basketball Team’s Road to the Final Four

It all started on March 16th when the Siue Basketball team won their conference championship game. This victory allowed them to advance to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament also known as “March Madness ” They entered the tournament as a number fifteen seed, meaning they were not favored to win any of their games. In the first round, they faced off against the second seed, the University of Michigan Siue had a great game and upset Michigan by a score of 75-72. This victory allowed them to advance to the second round where they faced off against the seven seed, the University of Louisville Once again, Siue played very well and upset Louisville by a score of 66-57. This win gave them a spot in the Sweet Sixteen where they would face off against the one seed, Duke University

In one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament history, Siue defeated Duke by a score of 74-73. This set up a matchup in the Elite Eight against third seed Texas Tech Siue played their best game of the tournament and won by a score 68-52. This victory gave them a spot in the Final Four where they would face off against first seed Gonzaga. Unfortunately, Siue’s Cinderella run came to an end as they lost to Gonzaga by a score of 77-62. Although they did not win the National Championship it was an incredible run for Siue basketball and something that will be remembered for years to come.

The team’s first game was against a tough opponent, but they pulled out a victory. They then went on to win their next two games, earning a spot in the Final Four.

The Siue basketball team started their tournament run with a win over the University of North Carolina followed by a win over Duke University They then defeated the University of Kentucky in the Sweet Sixteen. In the Elite Eight, they narrowly defeated the University of Michigan Finally, in the Final Four, they lost to Villanova University

Although they didn’t win the whole thing, it was still an impressive run for the Siue Basketball team

The Siue Basketball Team’s Quest for the Final Four

Since its inception in 1967, the Siue Basketball Team has been on a quest to make it to the Final Four. This year, they finally did it. The team had an incredible season, finishing with a record of 32-2. They made it to the Elite Eight, but lost to eventual champion Kansas. Nevertheless, the team’s achievement is still an incredible accomplishment.

The quest for the Final Four began in earnest when Head Coach Rick Majerus took over in 1989. Majerus led the team to five NCAA tournament appearances, but they always fell short of their goal. In 1996, guard Andrew Wiggins became the first player in Siue history to be drafted into the NBA. Wiggins was followed by center Brad Miller in 2000 and forward Marques Johnson in 2003.

The next few years were difficult for the team, as they failed to make the NCAA tournament In 2009, they finally broke through, led by guard Kent Bazemore The team made it to the Sweet Sixteen, but lost to North Carolina

In 2012, Siue made another run at the Final Four, led by Bazemore and forward Dwayne Evans. The team made it to the Elite Eight, but lost again, this time to Kentucky.

This year was different. The team was led by seniors Javon Bess and Armon Fletcher. They won their first 28 games before losing to Northern Iowa in the Missouri Valley Conference Championship game Siue then won four straight games in the NCAA Tournament including upsets of Vanderbilt and Cincinnati, before losing to Kansas in the Elite Eight.

Despite coming up just short of their goal, the Siue Basketball team had an incredible season and will be remembered for years to come.

Duke was one of the strongest teams in the country, but Siue was not intimidated. The Siue Cougars began their season in November of 2020, just as the Covid-19 pandemic was beginning to surge in the United States The team wasundeterred, however, and went on to have one of the best seasons in program history.

Led by head coach Nick Brennen and top scorers Jalen Horton-Tucker and Aiden Kraus, the Cougars went on an improbable run through the NCAA Tournament becoming the first team ever to make it to the Final Four without playing a single Home game

The team’s historic season came to an end in the semifinals, but their courage and determination in the face of adversity will be remembered for years to come.
