This included both the Atlantic 10 conference tournament and any chance at an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament
This ruling came as a shock to many, as the team was in the midst of a strong season. They would finish with a record of 18-10 and 11-5 in conference play This was good for 3rd place in the Conference Standings The team’s best player, J.R. Bremer, had just been named first team all-conference.
The ban was due to multiple incidents of academic fraud committed by members of the Basketball staff This included helping players pass courses they were struggling in and inflating grades so that players would remain eligible to play.
The NCAA’s decision came down just days before the start of the Conference Tournament which left the team with no time to appeal the decision. As a result, they were forced to sit out and watch as George Washington went on to win the conference tournament and receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament
This was undoubtedly one of the darkest moments in St. Bonaventure’s Basketball History The school would eventually be placed on probation and ordered to vacate all wins from the 2002-03 season as a result of these violations.
