St. Norbert hockey, which began in 1931, is a traditions-rich program that has produced numerous championship teams and NHL players over the years. The institutional roots of the program date back to the early days of the school, when St. Norbert founder Denis Kavanaugh established a Hockey Team as part of the college’s physical education curriculum. Kavanaugh’s team, which played its first game against a local High School squad, went on to win the state championship in 1932.

Under Head Coach Mike Kelley, who took over the program in 1988, St. Norbert has won nine NCAA Division III national titles, including seven in the last eight years. The team has also produced a number of NHL players including current Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews and Stanley Cup champion goaltender Tony Esposito.
