The History of Strake Jesuit Baseball

Strake Jesuit Baseball is a team on the rise. The team has been competitive in recent years and is looking to take the next step forward. The program has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1957. The following is a brief history of Strake Jesuit Baseball

The team was founded in 1957 by a group of students from Strake Jesuit College Preparatory school. The team was originally known as the Strake Jesuit Crusaders. The Crusaders competed in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) league. In their first season, the Crusaders won the CYO championship.

The team enjoyed success in the early years, winning CYO championships in 1958, 1959, and 1960. In 1961, the Crusaders joined the Texas Interscholastic League (TIL). The move to the TIL proved to be a challenge for the young team. The Crusaders struggled in their first few years in the TIL, finishing with a losing record in each of their first three seasons.

However, the Crusaders turned things around in 1964, finishing with a winning record for the first time since joining the TIL. The team continued to improve in subsequent years, culminating with a state championship appearance in 1967. The Crusaders fell short of winning the state title, but they finished as state runner-ups.

The 1968 season was another successful one for the Crusaders, as they once again finished as state runner-ups. In 1969, the Crusader finally broke through and won their first state championship The team went on to win back-to-back state titles in 1970 and 1971. After winning another State Championship in 1972, the Crusader went on to win their fifth straight state title in 1973.

The 1974 season marked a change for the Crusader baseball program Strake Jesuit decided to move up to Class 5A, which was then the highest classification in Texas high school baseball The move proved to be too much for the young team, as they struggled against their 5A competition and failed to make it back to the state tournament

The Team’s Recent Success

The Strake Jesuit Baseball Team has seen a lot of success in recent years The team has won two State Championships and has been to the playoffs every year since 2013. In 2017, the team made it to the Elite Eight of the playoffs, and in 2018, they made it to the Final Four.

The team is led by Head Coach Steve Menashe, who has been with the team since 2013. He has coached the team to two state championships and four trips to the playoffs.

The Team’s Coaching Staff

The Strake Jesuit Baseball Coaching Staff is led by head coach Brad Cerecke. Coach Cerecke is a graduate of Christopher Columbus High School and played college baseball at the University of Alabama from 1998-2002. He was drafted in the 42nd round by the Montreal Expos in 2002 and played minor League Baseball before embarking on his coaching career. In his 17 years as a coach, Coach Cerecke has coached at the high school collegiate, and professional levels. He has been the Head Coach at Strake Jesuit since 2019 and has led the team to a 40-17 record in his two seasons at the helm.

Assistant coaches Matt Denton and Brandon Davis both played college baseball at the University of Houston Coach Denton is in his first season as an Assistant Coach at Strake Jesuit after spending four years as the Head coach at Bellaire high school Coach Davis is in his second season on the Strake Jesuit coaching staff and serves as the team’s pitching coach. He also works with the team’s catchers and hitters.

Rounding out the Coaching Staff are volunteer assistant coaches Kyle Machado and Kevin O’Brien. Coach Machado is a former pitcher at St. Thomas University who also spent time playing professionally in independent leagues. He is entering his third season on the Strake Jesuit coaching staff and works with the team’s pitchers and hitters. Coach O’Brien is a graduate of Strake Jesuit who played Collegiate Baseball at Texas A&M Corpus Christi He rejoined the Strake Jesuit Coaching Staff in 2020 after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Blinn College
