The History of the Super Regionals

The term “super regional” is a baseball qualification format used by the NCAA to determine which teams will advance to the College World Series (CWS). The term became official in 2005 when the NCAA restructured its postseason tournament format. The Super Regional round includes sixteen teams, eight from each side of the country, that are paired up and play each other in a best-of-three series.

The team that wins their super regional advances to the CWS, while the loser goes home. The current super regional system replaced the old method of sending teams to multiple sites for regionals and then having them re-seed for the next round. This new system was put into place in order to save money and time.

The first ever super regional was held in 2006 between Oregon State and Pepperdine. The two teams split the first two games, with Oregon State winning the decisive third game to advance to the CWS. In 2007, Miami (FL) became the first team to sweep their way through a super regional, beating Mississippi State two games to zero.

The most recent College World Series champions are Vanderbilt, who won it all in 2019. Florida has been runners up three times in super regionals, most recently in 2017.
