But all of this hard work pays off when they see the results on the court.

The Susquehanna Difference
Since Head coach Steve Shondell took over the program in 2006, the Susquehanna women’s basketball team has seen a dramatic turnaround. In his first year, the team won just four games. However, by his fourth season, the team had improved to 18-9 and reached the Landmark Conference semifinals.
What is the difference between Susquehanna women’s basketball and other programs?
One of the biggest differences is Shondell’s commitment to recruiting and developing local talent. In his first year, he recruited six players from within a 50-mile radius of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania (Susquehanna’s campus). By his fourth season, that number had grown to 12.
Shondell also emphasizes defense and rebounding. In his first year, the team allowed an average of 63 points per game (ppg). By his fourth season, that number had dropped to 53 ppg. The team also went from averaging 31 rebounds per game (rpg) in his first year to 41 rpg in his fourth season.
Finally, Shondell has instilled a winning culture within the program. In his first year, the team lost 17 games. By his fourth season, they had only nine losses. Moreover, they have won at least 15 games in each of the last three seasons and have reached the Landmark Conference semifinals in two of those seasons.
A Legacy in the Making
The Susquehanna Women’s basketball team has been on the rise ever since head coach Lindsay Yoshida took over the program four years ago. The team has seen a steady increase in wins each year, culminating in a historic 2019-2020 Season in which the team won 21 games, earned a spot in the Landmark conference tournament for the first time since 2016, and made it to the semifinal round of the tournament. This season also saw Susquehanna crack the top 25 of the Women’s Basketball coaches Association (WBCA) National Poll for the first time in program history, coming in at #24 in the final poll of the season.
This past season was truly a special one for Susquehanna women’s basketball. A large part of that can be attributed to the outstanding play of senior guard Katie Spence, who was named Landmark Conference Player of the Year and earned a spot on the WBCA All-America Honorable Mention team, becoming just the second player in program history to receive All-America honors. Spence wasn’t alone in her achievements, as she was joined by junior forward Shelby Mueller who was named First Team All-Landmark Conference, and senior guard Ally Frisch who was named Second Team All-Landmark Conference.
With such a Successful Season now in the rearview mirror, Susquehanna women’s basketball is poised to continue its ascent up the national ranks. The team will return all five starters from last year’s squad, including Spence and Mueller who will look to build on their already stellar careers. Incoming freshman guard Clara Healy will also look to make an immediate impact after being named Pennsylvania’s Gatorade Player of the Year and a McDonald’s All-American nominee. With a core group of experienced returners and some talented newcomers joining the fold, Susquehanna women’s basketball is poised for continued success in 2020-2021 and beyond.
